Mental Health in Oshkosh
For many people living with a mental illness, seeking help is simply out of the question due to the stigma associated with being mentally ill. As a result, thousands of Oshkosh residents forego treatment they need in order to function at an optimal level. In fact, the number of poor mental health days reported by Wisconsin area residents is on the rise. In 2013, the average citizen experienced 3.7 poor mental health days each month, which represents a 14 percent increase over the previous year.2 However, Wisconsin United for Mental Health is a coalition of public and private agencies working hard to reverse this trend through promotion of strategies to improve mental health and community outreach programs to educate the public about mental illness. An additional focus is on improving the working relationship between various community mental health agencies. In so doing, access to services will improve and become more inclusive for all those who need mental health care. Survivors of suicide and those who have lost a loved one can find care and support in the Survivors of Suicide support group offered by the Community for Hope. These groups are free of charge and are led by trained facilitators. Both teen and adult groups are available and provide survivors a safe place to talk openly and honestly about their experience, their struggles and their successes. The Oshkosh Civility Project is a community-based initiative aimed at improving the overall sense of belonging in the city. This mission is achieved by teaching others to be compassionate, fair, and understanding, and to take a balanced approach to interacting with people unlike themselves. Inclusivity, respect, and responsibility are three primary hallmarks of the initiative's programs. By focusing on these attributes, it is hoped that the community becomes a more accepting place for people who may otherwise face discrimination, such as those who live with a mental illness or chemical dependency.5
