The historic Wisconsin city of Oshkosh features many exciting and entertaining locations to spend the day. Families can take in the Grand Opera House, which features a student discovery series for younger patrons. Located on the shores of Lake Winnebago, there are plenty of water activities for families as well. The community is offered educational and instructional programs that can help better lives, such as the homebuyer's workshop and the Snapshots of History event. Winter carnivals are also hosted as well as farm shows. Check out the Hops and Pops event to learn about beer making with live musicians and beer tasting. This event is particularly popular, with limited admission that has sold out in previous years. Ice fishing tournaments and fish fries offer a great way to socialize and get to know your fellow residents. There are many ways to learn about the area and your neighbors through Oshkosh's many engaging community events.1

Mental Health in Oshkosh

For many people living with a mental illness, seeking help is simply out of the question due to the stigma associated with being mentally ill. As a result, thousands of Oshkosh residents forego treatment they need in order to function at an optimal level. In fact, the number of poor mental health days reported by Wisconsin area residents is on the rise. In 2013, the average citizen experienced 3.7 poor mental health days each month, which represents a 14 percent increase over the previous year.2 However, Wisconsin United for Mental Health is a coalition of public and private agencies working hard to reverse this trend through promotion of strategies to improve mental health and community outreach programs to educate the public about mental illness. An additional focus is on improving the working relationship between various community mental health agencies. In so doing, access to services will improve and become more inclusive for all those who need mental health care. Additional resources can be obtained by calling Mental Health America of Wisconsin at 414-276-3122.3

Survivors of suicide and those who have lost a loved one can find care and support in the Survivors of Suicide support group offered by the Community for Hope. These groups are free of charge and are led by trained facilitators. Both teen and adult groups are available and provide survivors a safe place to talk openly and honestly about their experience, their struggles and their successes. The adult group meets once monthly, and the teen group meets on an as-needed basis. For further details, contact Community for Hope at 920-230-4840.4

Current Initiatives

The Oshkosh Civility Project is a community-based initiative aimed at improving the overall sense of belonging in the city. This mission is achieved by teaching others to be compassionate, fair, and understanding, and to take a balanced approach to interacting with people unlike themselves. Inclusivity, respect, and responsibility are three primary hallmarks of the initiative's programs. By focusing on these attributes, it is hoped that the community becomes a more accepting place for people who may otherwise face discrimination, such as those who live with a mental illness or chemical dependency.5
