"Life is series of challenges; sometimes we need help along the way."

Barbara Beard Stephan, Ph.D. is a licensed Clinical Psychologist (PSY 22673).  She holds an M.A. in Counseling Psychology and a Ph.D. in Transpersonal Psychology both from The Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, CA. She also holds a B.S. in Psychology and an M.A. in Special Education from the University of Santa Clara in Santa Clara, CA.

For twenty-five years Barbara worked in the field of Special Education, primarily with the dyslexic population. In her mid-forties she returned to graduate school to pursue her passion, the field of clinical psychology, so she could work as a counselor/therapist. Barbara believes that psychology is more than the study of the mind. She believes that we are all integrated individuals guided by mind, body, and spiritual influences.

Barbara follows this philosophy in her daily life, both professionally and personally, always applying an integrated approach.  She receives her clients with compassion and believes that an alliance based on understanding and non-judgment is foremost to establishing a successful therapeutic relationship. Her areas of expertise include transpersonal psychology, life transitions, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, PTSD, substance abuse, aging, spirituality, and existential issues. She also has experience with the newly developing area of energy psychology. Additionally, she works as an educational consultant, helping parents and teachers understand the nature of learning and related educational challenges. Barbara also does psychological assessments for The Center for Ministry in Oakland, CA.

In her personal world, Barbara is a wife and mother. She has two children who are in their twenties. In addition, she has a great interest in synesthesia (a phenomenon of sensory connections between different sensory modalities); she researched this area while completing her doctoral degree.

Barbara sees clients in her office in Santa Clara, CA and she also works some over the Internet.
