Counseling is my second career following eleven years in the Computer Programming industry. I made the switch because I wanted to make a significant and positive impact in people's lives. I graduated from Cincinnati Christian University in 1998 with my master's degree in counseling and I have not looked back. It is a privilege to be involved with people in such special and deep ways.
I began my counseling career at the Work Resource Center in Cincinnati, OH helping people with disabilities make the transition into the workforce. From there I worked at One Hope Christian Counseling for 2 years as a therapist. I now have two ministries, one belonging to Plum Creek Christian Church and the other to the Vineyard Christian Church of Florence, KY. In total, I have been practicing for over fifteen years. In that time, I have continued my education with a special focus on treating trauma. I attended a special class for treating Dissociate Identity Disorder (previously known as Multiple Personality Disorder) and I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
I approach counseling from a holistic perspective. For example, our emotional condition can affect our physical condition and our spirituality. Therefore, if you choose to see me, we will consider all three aspects of what makes you unique as we work through your particular issues(s). As you make progress, you will emotionally feel better, spiritually lighter, and maybe even physically healthier.
I counsel from the perspective that we are all wounded throughout our lives either intentionally or unintentionally by those we love and/or by life's circumstances. As a result of those wounds, we learn to think and behave in ways that either inflict further injury or isolate us from relationships that can help us heal, including our spiritual relationships. I use multiple therapeutic modalities including EMDR, Cognitive-Behavioral, spiritual, Gestalt, and Client-Centered to seek out your soul wounds and bring healing. I have found EMDR very effective in resolving multiple issues originating from various degrees of past and current trauma in your life. After EMDR therapy, many clients will tell me they feel a burden lifted from their shoulders or they will feel that whatever was causing them great anxiety now has little to no impact. They may even feel closer to God. With other modalities besides EMDR, I will encourage you to talk through your soul wounds while we work together to teach you healthier ways of thinking and behaving. These changes can result in you feeling lighter, less anxious and more joyful. You may experience healthier relationships in which you can receive and give love.
My philosophy in relationship counseling is that although the relationship has its problems, it also carries some of the power to bring healing to each person involved. I use multiple tools to assist in that healing process including exercises from Dr. John Gottman, Ph.D., communication exercises, emotionally-focused exercises, and spiritual teachings and exercises as appropriate. Although the process can be painful, you can grow closer together, experiencing a deeper, more loving, authentic relationship.
If you choose to work with me, you will receive unconditional respect regardless of your faith. Although the majority of my clients prefer Christian counseling, I am happy to meet with secular clients or clients of other faiths. I will not force God or the Bible on you and I will follow your lead with regard to the use of Scripture and prayer.
