Mental Health in London
London is a city of nearly 400, 000 residents, and is most popularly known as something of a college town. Youth initiatives and student empowerment are common sentiments amongst the people, and many community non profit organizations have campaigned for the development of better mental health services. University students often develop mental health issues due to the stress of school commitments and the demands of college life. The result is a general rise in anxiety disorders and violent behaviour.
The University of Western Ontario (UWO), based in London runs a not-for-profit Student Development Centre where individual counseling sessions offer a variety of solution based therapy techniques.2 Students and adolescents from the university and around the city may join personal or group workshops to discuss concerns related several issues.
Some of the many counseling services offered at the UWO student development centre include:
Stress& Anxiety
Relationship Issues
Body Image issues
Anger Management
Emotional & Physical Abuse
For more information, anyone interested may contact the University's student development centre at 661-3031. For London Residents looking to access a 24 hour crisis hotline, call 1-866-933-2023.3
Current Initiatives
The Canadian Mental Health Association's (CMHA) London-Middlesex branch is the largest not-for-profit mental health institution in Western Ontario.4 Citizens also have the option to take part in the WOTCH community mental health services. WOTCH is the Western Ontario Therapeutic Community Hospital. It's a residential counseling facility where participants check themselves in for a short period of time of their choosing, and devote their time to discussing strategies to deal with mental health issues. It has launched several of its programs in amalgamation with the CMHA, and is an excellent non-profit mental health facility at the disposal of London's residents.
