Mental Health in Lafayette
In Lafayette, the well-being of children and adolescents is a top priority with 24.9% of the population under the age of 18.2 The city encourages involvement with these young citizens by offering great schools and plenty of activities. Nevertheless, some children in Lafayette do not have ideal home environments. Whether victims of abuse or neglect, children are removed from homes every day and, often, this trauma results in serious behavioral and psychological problems.
Several agencies in Contra Costa county provide services to these troubled youth. Cherry Lane House, part of the Youth Homes, Inc. organization, has been serving children in crisis since 1965.3 Here, children can get the help they need in a stable environment. Among the services offered are emergency shelter, foster home placement, group homes, and community-based counseling. Current Education
Since Proposition 63 (the Mental Health Services Act) passed in 2004, Contra Costa Health Services has been working toward educating the public on ways to improve mental health for people of all ages. In addition to providing valuable resources, such as links to mental health providers and information regarding their annual plan updates, Contra Costa Health Services offers several brochures, handouts, and self-assessments for improving mental health. Current titles that can be found on their website include Facing Disappointment, Tips for Reducing Stress, and Tips to Maintain a Positive Attitude.5
