My name is Heather Hopkins. I have a background in Psychology and a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology from Memorial University of Newfoundland. I am a Certified Canadian Counselor through the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (www.ccpa-accp.ca/) and certified through the Association of Naturopaths and Naturotherapists (ANN). I am affiliated with several EAP programs and depending on your coverage, billable through some insurance providers.

I have completed extensive certificate training in the area of Play Therapy through the Canadian Association of Child and Play Therapy (levels 1-3). I enjoy working with children and adolescents and their families. Most of my work experience has had me working with families in various settings. The benefit of working with the family is that no one exists in isolation. The family can be a major source of support for a young person who may be struggling. Helping members grow in their understanding of each other promotes the family as a vital support system. In terms of children, play is their natural form of communication. Adults talk through their problems whereas children use play. The play of a child struggling with an emotional difficulty differs from a child who is not struggling. Provided with a warm and caring environment and the appropriate types of materials, children are able to work though many challenging life events and emotions through play.

When I work with adults I take a holistic, client centered approach. I draw upon different therapeutic strategies including: Humanistic, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness Techniques. I work with the client to determine realistic goals and a plan in order to attain their goals. The benefit of an eclectic approach allows me to adapt strategies in order to best suit client needs. I believe clients have the answers they need within themselves and I work collaboratively to help them discover their own strengths. I feel that it is a great privilege to be in this role. I have successfully worked with clients struggling with grief and loss, depression and anxiety, relationship challenges, parenting, post trauma, self-esteem, life transitions, stress, separation/divorce/blended families and communication.
Besides Play Therapy, I have additional experience in the areas of Suicide Intervention, bereavement, Emotionally Focused Couples Counselling, Applied Behavior Analysis, and facilitating groups (i.e. parenting young children and children experiencing violence at home). I have extensive experience implementing psychoeducational groups in the area of grief/loss, separation/divorce, blended families and assertive communication.
