Part of my work is to listen closely. As I listen to you, I encourage you to listen to yourself also. In doing this, you will begin to discern which choices in your life bring you happiness and joy and which choices bring about stagnation and self sabotage.

Mental Health in Carrollton

Individuals who live with a mental illness can face many barriers to normal daily functioning. The stigma of mental illness makes it doubly difficult to be an active member of the community.2 However, making a difference in someone else's life as a volunteer is a great way to boost self-esteem and feelings of self-worth, while breaking down the barriers to being engaged with one's peers and community members. The Community Foundation of West Georgia is a storehouse of volunteer opportunities in Carrollton. From helping the needy at the local soup kitchen to mentoring youth after school to serving as an advocate for the mentally ill, there is an abundance of opportunities to improve oneself and the community. Contact the foundation at 770-832-1462 for additional information.3

The Georgia Suicide Prevention Information Network (GSPIN) provides support for survivors and their families, prevention and intervention materials to schools and community organizations, as well as valuable information for identifying warning signs of suicidal ideation. GSPIN also helps develop locally based coalitions that reach out to communities and engage stakeholders in conversations about the importance of prevention and intervention programs. By partnering with government agencies, non-profits, and other organizations, GSPIN has greatly increased awareness and connected those in need to valuable resources that facilitate improved mental health. Call 770-354-7616 for further details.4

Eating disorders are most common among young women.5 To address this mental health condition among students at the University of West Georgia, the schools' Health Services Department offers a variety of resources. Information for people suffering from an eating disorder is available, as are resources for individuals concerned about the health and safety of a friend or loved one they feel may have a disorder. The university's counseling center is also available for consultations and support. Contact the university at 678-839-6428 for more details about the resources available.6

Current Initiatives

The Fatherhood Initiative is a state-funded program that seeks to help non-custodial fathers catch up on child support payments and begin to provide for their children in a timely manner. The state recognizes that many parents want to pay support, but can't due to a lack of education, unemployment or underemployment, or mental health issues such as alcohol or drug addiction that interfere with an individual's ability to work. As part of the initiative, participants are provided with assistance in finding job training, completing their GED, acquiring transportation, and getting help to overcome addiction. Ongoing life skills classes and employment related workshops ensure parents have the skills they need to be a good parent and find a decent wage in order to support their family.7
