Spokane, Washington is a city that is rich in history, with many things for people to see and do. Most famous for its Native American festivals and cultures, there are several other things to consider taking the time to see. Spokane is sunny over 260 days per year and offers people both the relaxing scenery and all of the major amenities that you would hope to find in a major city.1 Some of the most popular things to do in the city include the downtown water park, the mountain bike trails, the serene lakes and the local wineries. Home to the famous Catholic university Gonzaga, its basketball team, the Bulldogs, rose to fame in the late 1990s and continue to be a perennial contender each year in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.
Mental Health in Spokane
Over the last few years, Washington has been one of the top ten states for rates of drug abuse. Alarmingly, this behavior is common among individuals that are as young as 12 years of age. This explains why the average illicit drug use in the state is two percent higher than the national average, and why the rate of drug-induced deaths is also the highest in Washington.2 An organization dedicated to helping eradicate this problem is Northeast Washington Area Narcotics Anonymous. This organization believes that anyone can stop using drugs and lose the desire to use drugs. Free meetings are offered throughout the Spokane area and provide individuals with a support system to stop using. For emergency assistance, or to inquire about meeting times and locations, call 509-325-5045.3
The Spokane Regional Health District recognizes the significant impact that suicide has on the community. As a result, the agency offers many free resources for those seeking more information about preventing such tragedies. Information about warning signs, prevention education, support services and other resources is available, as is specialized information regarding elder suicide. If an emergency situation arises, the health district provides a hotline for people to seek help. That number is 509-838-4428.4
Current Education
Those interested in entering the human services field as a counselor can get their graduate studies underway at Gonzaga University. The school offers a master's degree program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling that prepares students to become master practitioners who demonstrate empathy, emotional understanding, solid theoretical knowledge, as well as the ability to implement effective counseling strategies in order to help clients live mentally healthier lives. The program is designed to prepare graduates to work in a number of settings, including college counseling centers, community mental health agencies, and social services agencies. For further details about the program, call 509-313-3821.5
