What I believe:
Engaging in counselling takes a great deal of strength, and is the first step to positive change and emotional healing. I offer clients a safe space, where they will be heard and not judged, and can begin the path to healing and recovery, as well as self-exploration. I believe that the mind and body are naturally meant to heal, and I focus on the whole person - mind, body and spirit. The process of psychotherapy looks different to every individual, as your story and life are unique. You are the expert of your own life and healing, and I am there to help you walk that path. Collaboratively we will work towards goals that you would like to meet, and changes in your life that will help you reach your potential.
I may play different roles as your psychotherapist including guide, educator, encourager, challenger, barrier breaker, and constant optimist.
Who I am:
I have always been interested in helping people, and the resilience and strength people have following adversity has always been a great motivator in my desire to engage in therapeutic work. I received my Masters of Education (Counselling Psychology) from the University of Western Ontario, and I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC). I have experience in a variety of mental health settings including counselling women and children residing in a woman's shelters, providing group counselling with individuals with PTSD in a hospital setting, and counselling and providing advocacy to youth and their families residing in group homes and youth justice facilities.
Clients Served & Areas of competence:
I have worked with adults, adolescents, and families on a variety of issues; including: histories of trauma (ex. childhood abuse, intimate partner violence, as well as intergenerational trauma), self-injury, suicidal ideation, addictions, grief and loss, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, interpersonal difficulties, life transitions, the forensic settings (court systems, individuals in custody and on parole) and personal growth. I have always been humbled by the strength and growth clients have, and want to continue to help individuals find their inner strength to not just recover, but grow from their experiences.
I work from a trauma informed, strength based perspective and will utilize numerous modalities in our work together; such as Cognitive Behavioural, Person-Centered, Narrative, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and mindfulness. I believe that all individuals are resilient and have strengths, however sometimes these are hard for them to recognize through their suffering. Together, we will work to help you recognize your strengths, build on your resources and supports to help you alleviate your suffering and enhance your growth and wellbeing.
Please contact me with any questions you have, or to make an appointment. I look forward to hearing from you.
