Even though Kingston’s population and popularity was declining, the city still remained an important Great Lakes port and center for locomotive manufacturing and shipbuilding.1 The locomotive manufacturing company, Canadian Locomotive Company was the largest locomotive company in the British Empire.  A lot of the manufacturing companies have left the area, leaving the majority of the economic stimulus as institutional, military and service/retail companies. During the 20th century, this city had undergone a series of annexations which encompassed the areas west of the Township.  Large residential subdivisions were subsequently built in the 1950s and 60s.  Due to the large imbalance of taxation between the city and the surrounding areas, the townships were incorporated to include the Pittsburgh Township, forming a new City of Kingston.  The boundary now expands to rural areas north of Highway 401 and east of the Cataraqui River, which was the original name of the city.

The military has a large presence in Kingston, dating back to the 1600s.  This is due to the city being strategically located at the head of the St. Lawrence River and at the mouth of the Cataraqui River, which borders the United States. This area has also become a home base for communications training with the Canadian Forces.  While military shipbuilding was once important, it is the Forts and Barracks that remain as a steady presence in the area.  Camp Barriefield, which is now called McNaughton Barracks, was built at the beginning of WWI and expanded during WWII.  Vimy Barracks was established in 1937 specifically for the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals.  Through counselling, you will find a counselor who genuinely cares and who will use strong, competent therapy to help you through your circumstances.  There was also a military aerodrome for flight training during WWII.  The military units are supported by the Canadian Forces Base.   Vimy Barracks and McNaughton Barracks are both located east of the downtown area.

Mental Health in Kingston

Kingston, the Limestone City, is located in Ontario at the head of St. Lawrence River. It is one of Canada's oldest cities, and is home to approximately 124,000 residents. Statistics for last year (2016) reveal that approximately 21 percent of the city's population are under some form of perceived life stress.2 The smoking and drinking rates are 14 and 18 percent roughly, respectively. Although the perceived mental health is very good, there are several organizations in Kingston which provide care for people who suffer from mental illnesses and addiction.

Frontenac Community Mental Health and Addiction Servicesis one such organization. They offer support for mental health patients, substance abuse patients and those dealing with serious addictions. They have Assertive Community Treatment Teams made up of professionals from various physical and mental health disciplines. They also offer Crisis Services, for which you may call 613-544-4229.3

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health also operates in Kingston. It is the country's largest mental health research institute and hospital, and they offer numerous rehabilitation programs and therapeutic treatments for mental health patients. For general information about their programs, you may call them on 416-535-8501.4

Current Initiatives

Mental Health First Aid Canada is an initiative launched to provide training to people so that they can manage a person who is experiencing a mental health crisis. Quite similar to first aid, MHFA is administered until proper medical treatment can be given to the patients, and their condition is alleviated.

Families of mentally ill patients, instructors, counsellors, health service workers and volunteers are among some of the people who can benefit from the MHFA training program. It will cover topics such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders and eating disorders, and will provide training on dealing with overdose, panic attacks and suicidal behaviour.
