I believe that our struggles with mental health can often make us think we are outside looking in. Different. Broken. The Black Sheep. When we learn how to change our view of our unique challenges or experiences they can become strengths and lose their power over us.

San Antonio is rich in Spanish and Texas heritages, nestled just a few hours away from the Mexican border. Approximately one third of the total city's population is Hispanic and many of the residents speak fluent Spanish. Fascinating in this city are the old Franciscan missions that are still standing and in excellent condition to this day. Although the city is smaller than Houston or Dallas, it offers many great things to see and do. One of the most popular tourist attractions is Sea World, nestled in the hills right outside of the city. You can also head into the city center to tour the historic Alamo and to walk along the river walk.1

Mental Health in San Antonio

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Texas receives a grade of D for its mental health care system. Lack of funding and lack of access to programs and services contribute to the problem of providing care to everyone who needs it.2 Fortunately, San Antonio residents can participate in state-funded programs at the Center for Health Care Services. The center provides programs for children and adults. Addiction and treatment services are available, as are day treatment and outreach programs for the city's homeless. The center also offers crisis services to those in the midst of a mental health emergency. For immediate help, please call the 24-hour crisis line at 210-223-7233.3

Individuals who have been touched by suicide can find support and assistance at Survivors of Loved Ones' Suicides (SOLOS). SOLOS is a peer-led organization dedicated to helping survivors work through the emotional devastation of the death of a loved one. The group meets once a month to share stories, lend support, and provide resources. For details about the support group, please call 210-885-7069.4

Current Initiatives

Acknowledging that spirituality and religion can be powerful forces in helping the mentally ill manage their symptoms, the Center for Health Care Services has created the Pillars of Healing Initiative. Pillars of Healing is a faith-based program that will be piloted at three churches of different faiths in the San Antonio area. Each program specifically targets distinct ethnic and faith groups, including Hispanic, African-American, and Evangelical. The goal of the initiative is to develop an understanding among these groups that body and mind wellness are interconnected, and that in order to maximize the chances of recovery, the needs of both the body and mind should be addressed.5
