Broomfield is located just outside of Denver and serves as the choice city for those who wish to commute to the metropolis. With approximately 58,000 residents, Broomfield has had quite a history regarding its boundaries. Incorporated in 1961, the city grew to unspeakable size, crossing four county lines. Causing much confusion amongst its residents Broomfield finally became its own county in 2001, being dubbed the 64th newest and smallest county in Colorado.1 The town's namesake originated from broomcorn, also known as common millet, which is grown around the area. Regardless of its size, the city hosts many activities, enjoyed by people of all age and caliber. For example, the Great American July 4th Picnic is a rather happening attraction, showcasing good barbecue, live music, and fireworks. Another unique event in Broomfield is Broomstock, a family friendly alternative celebration with live music, art, and food. Usually held on the last day of school, Broomstock is sponsored by many of the community's businesses, and is one of the most thrilling events of the summer.

Broomfield is a relatively homogenous community, with nearly 90 percent of it's residents identifying as Caucasian. It is a well-educated community as well, with over 47 percent of citizens holding at least a bachelor's degree. The median household income eclipses $80,000 per year, making it an affluent suburb. However, the number of working poor in the community is on the rise.2 As a result, the need for support services that provide food, clothing, shelter, and other essential items is higher than ever.

The 2nd Act program was established in Broomfield and Boulder Counties in order to provide support services for individuals with mental illness who have become involved in the criminal justice system. The program strives to help community members transition from detention back into the community, as well as reduce the likelihood of recidivism. Peer support groups are available, as are job training programs. Additional information about 2nd Act is available by calling 303-684-0555.3
