Frequently Asked Questions

What if I want counselling and not art therapy?

That’s absolutely fine. The therapy sessions are geared toward your comfort level so you can make as little or as much art as you like. Nalini Iype is also trained in counselling and traditional talk therapy and is certified by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

What is art therapy?

Art therapy uses creative ways to express thoughts and feelings. The process of making the art and then reflecting on the images created can help individuals develop self-awareness, facilitate personal growth, and learn how to cope with everyday issues.

Who can benefit from art therapy?

Everyone of any age, gender or culture can benefit from art therapy. Children, adults, couples and families may achieve beneficial results from the therapeutic nature of making art.

Do I need any experience with art? What if I’m not very good at drawing?

You do not need any art experience or to be able to draw at a certain level to benefit from art therapy. The focus of art therapy is not on the quality or artistic merit of the images you create, but rather on being able to freely express what you’re feeling using the art materials.

What happens during an art therapy session?

Although each session varies with the needs of the client, it usually involves making art followed by a verbal exploration of the image that was created. Afterwards you may choose to discuss the emotional connections that you make to the art and the experience of making it.

Does the therapist interpret my art?

Your art is an expression of your personal thoughts and feelings therefore it is not interpreted. Guided by the therapist’s expertise and experience, together you can figure out exactly what the image means to you. The therapist may also point out themes and patterns that emerge through your art. However it may not be just the finished product that has therapeutic value, but also the process of making the art as well.

What kind of art materials would I use in art therapy?

Basic art supplies are used such as tempera paint, markers, pastels, clay, and collage materials, amongst other things. What can be done with the art materials is left up to the client’s creativity. Some clients also like to explore their feelings with music and movement.
