Lake Forest lies close to the decommissioned Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, which makes it a military oriented city. There are over 4,000 veterans in Lake Forest, and nearly 2 million in California.2 With many servicemen becoming more assimilated into the community, the plight of mental health and post traumatic disorder has become a point of interest for veterans, who may have become vulnerable or found life a bit challenging after time in the military. The Orange County Veterans Service Office seeks to assist veterans in obtaining the resources they need to be successful in civilian life. Staff members can help identify benefits and assist in completing the necessary paperwork to receive benefits. Information about community resources specifically for veterans is also available. The school's AVID program - Advancement Via Individual Determination - accelerates student learning by using research-based teaching methods that holds students accountable for their learning and pushes students to achieve the highest standards.4 Students who qualify for special education services receive assistance that facilitates their academic success in general education classes. Students also get support in resource classes or day classes, depending on the criteria set forth in their individual education plan (IEP). All special education students are provided a least restrictive environment in which to learn and interact with their peers.
