Some experiences in life touch us so profoundly, that they cause a ripple effect through the whole of our life—affecting us emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually.

These include experiences of trauma, relationship conflict, and significant life transitions. They also include experiences of loss—loss of a loved one, loss of hope, loss of health and quality of life, or loss of connection with others.

We are all in need of caring, empathetic persons to help us navigate the sometimes chaotic waters of human living.

River’s Edge Counselling Centre is the only one of its kind in St. Albert, Alberta. Unlike an individual practitioner, we believe that people deserve the best fit both in personality and specialization. By creating a community of professionals devoted to excellence in care, ongoing learning and collegial support, we feel our clients get the best support.

Along with individual counselling, we also offer group programs and free wellness talks

Founder & Director, Rivers Edge Counselling Center

In my counselling practice, I strive to create relationships in which you can feel safe to explore the effects of past and present experiences in your life, find creative and effective solutions to life’s challenges, and discover your inner wisdom and capacity for living a full and authentic life. Counselling is an opportunity to touch your own life in a hopeful, healing way, allowing the effects to ripple through every part of your life and being. In individual (adult), couples, and group therapy, it is a privilege for me to make this journey with clients.

Christine Cocker

Registered Psychologist

As a Registered Psychologist trained in Marriage and Family Therapy, I believe that relationships are central to the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities. An individual always functions and grows within a “system”, whether as a member of a couple, family or group. Individual goals and visions are best understood and pursued within this broad framework. In counselling, each person is encouraged to understand their unique situation and reach for attainable goals. Together, client and therapist work toward making changes needed for a better life.

Christine Crocker is a Registered Psychologist who has been providing services to families, couples and individuals since 2007, both in private practice and for agencies. Christine has a Masters in Science in Marital and Family Therapy through Loma Linda University and a Bachelor of Science Specialization awarded from the University of Alberta. Christine holds membership in good standing with the College of Alberta Psychologists (Reg# 3311) and the Psychologist Association of Alberta.

Throughout my time working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and life journeys I have found that the greatest inspiration to the human spirit is validation of one’s story and the uniqueness of that journey. The idea is to empower those to a balanced integrative path.

I am a registered Psychologist in the province of Alberta with experience and background working with children, adolescents and adults coping with Crisis, Trauma, Mental Health and Addictions. I work with individuals from a variety of cultural/ethnic, sexual, and spiritual identity backgrounds

As a registered psychologist my goals have been to assist and guide healing and develop one’s preferred way of being with emphasis on Solution-focused, Narrative, Mindfulness, and Cognitive Behavioral approaches to therapy. I have learned that our vulnerability is our strength when held with care and empowered to be resilient.

Janice Dicks
 Registered Psychologist

Practicing primarily from a cognitive behavioural orientation, I believe that our thoughts and behaviours influence how we feel; through changing unhelpful ways of thinking and behaving, individuals can learn to overcome their problems and improve their coping. As an adjunct, I incorporate positive psychology into my practice wherever possible, recognizing the importance and power of hope and optimism when faced with adversity. My practice is evidence-based, relying upon interventions that have been well-researched with documented effectiveness.

My experience as a psychologist primarily lies within the area of rehabilitative health, including trauma, physical injury, acute/chronic pain, and mild traumatic brain injury.

 Philosophy of Counselling

While the hub of human life may revolve around establishing interpersonal bonds, before such bonds can be fruitful it is the relationship that we have with ourselves that will ultimately define the kind of relationship we have with others.

As a psychotherapist I have come to appreciate that the healing process takes time and that the possibility for change unfolds, as the other would have it. I pride myself in helping my clients come to that “moment” of self-awareness wherein they can take control of their lives, as they move towards achieving a sense of individual wholeness.

The journey of therapy may originate as a search for an end to emotional suffering, but it is also one that may continue to develop towards a sense of self-renewal in one's personal life.

In my counselling practice I believe that the goal of therapy is to deepen self-awareness and inner understanding by helping to cultivate the inner drive towards personal growth.

Charlene Remenda-Madra

Certified Integrative Body Psychotherapist, rsw

Every event touches our mind, body and spirit.  As a therapist, I strive to see the whole person and the whole picture that has shaped you and the events leading up to our first meeting.  Because all problems stem from relationship issues I pay special attention to our relationship in hopes of creating a safe, non-judgmental place for you to begin, or continue, to heal.  A place where all of you can be accepted and where you might even be able to explore or share the things that might be difficult to face or share out in the ‘real’ world.  Together I hope to develop a goal, intention or vision for a better and happier life that begins from the inside and radiates out and I look forward to supporting you on your personal journey.

Grant Wardlow

Practicum Student, Master of Psychotherapy and Spirituality

Life is full of challenges that can sometimes be overwhelming to face alone. Using a client-centred approach, my commitment is to provide a safe, respectful and nonjudgmental environment from which you can begin to explore whatever life situations may be causing you undo stress or anxiety. I like to think of the counselling process as a therapeutic journey. Together we will find a therapeutic approach that best suits your individual needs and provides you with the strength and resources to help you heal or grow or change in ways that are congruent with your goals and desires.

Lori Tiemer, m.c.
Registered Psychologist

I believe in the power of a strong therapeutic relationship. Through building a solid rapport, my goal is to assist in the achievement of increased self-awareness and positive change.  I strive to offer a collaborative, non-judgmental, and trusting environment where difficult emotions can be explored. Every individual is unique and I believe in empowering people to discover the solutions that work best for them. I have spent significant time traveling and volunteering overseas and recognize the importance of demonstrating cultural sensitivity within my counselling practice.

Tania Johnson, m.c.

Registered Psychologist, Registered Play Therapist

The spectrum of life can range from absolutely exquisite to paralyzing. Changing family dynamics, trauma, identity issues and new emotional experiences can seem overwhelming. My role is to work with you in a respectful, warm and non-judgmental manner which empowers you to consider new perspectives, to implement new understandings and to nurture inner knowledge and potential.

I am a Registered Play Therapist with the American Association of Play Therapy. Through the use of therapeutic play, I will work with your child to process emotions, to learn new problem-solving skills and to experience mastery. Play therapy is effective in the treatment of a wide range of issues; including anxiety, changes in the family, grief and loss, or behavioural difficulties. I work with adolescents through the use of music therapy, art therapy, sand tray therapy or traditional counselling. Alongside parental/ guardian involvement, I will periodically work (with parental permission) with schools and community agencies to help create the very best environment for your child or adolescent to thrive.

I work primarily from an attachment based perspective. I believe that early relationships profoundly affect our development and behaviour in life.  In addition, I use an eclectic therapeutic approach that empowers clients to live a vibrant and enriched life that is driven by meaning.

Group Programs

Teen Anxiety Group

During adolescence, the struggle for identity and selfhood can bring about stress and feelings of apprehension. This group serves to facilitate the social and emotional development of teens as they learn to interact openly with others while they explore ways to manage and cope with their anxiety. Ultimately, this group aims to provide a safe and supportive space where teens can gain more insight and understanding into themselves, and support each other in exploring and discussing their experiences with anxiety.

Child Parent Relationship Training (CPRT)

Do you feel like you have lost control of your role as a parent? Do you find yourself yelling at your child more often than laughing with your child? Do you feel you have lost touch with your child...you don't feel as close as you'd like? Do you feel frustrated and find yourself saying the same things over and over, with no results? Would you like for your relationship with your child to go back to the "way it used to be"? Child-Parent-Relationship Training (CPRT) can help!

Rising Strong Group Program

The Rising Strong(tm) group will explore what it takes to get back up after we find ourselves in facedown moments. Everyone experiences pain, struggle, and failure. When we find ourselves in this place, we may not know how to talk about it, make sense of it and finds ways to get back up. This group is based on Brené Brown's new book: Rising Strong. With over 12 years of research experience in this area, she invites us to take the courageous steps of reestablishing yourself after a fall.
