Mill Valley, California is a relatively small city within Marin County located near San Francisco on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. Sometime in the 19th Century, a man named John Reed operated a functioning sawmill in the area known as Old Mill Park. This sawmill is what gave the city its present name. Currently, approximately 13,000 people call this area home.1 The area is by all standards considered very beautiful and serene. With South San Francisco out on the horizon, and the majestic Mount Tamalpais looming above, this is a perfect place for those who work in the city to experience a sense of life in the country. Mill Valley is not short of outdoor recreational activities. Several trails are available to those who wish to get away from it all and enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. The Tenderfoot Trail provides splendid views and access to the Muir Woods.

Mental Health in Mill Valley

While Mill Valley is a quiet and affluent area in which to live, many people in the area struggle with chemical dependency issues that require mental health care in order to overcome. The Bay Area experiences a higher rate of illegal drug use than other areas in California. In fact, nearly 22 percent of Bay Area adults use illegal drugs, a rate that is 7 percent higher than the national average. Over 22 percent of area residents engage in binge drinking as well.2 Consequently, substance abuse programs and services provided by qualified professionals are in high demand.

The Marin County government, in cooperation with local community partners, is developing several countywide initiatives aimed at improving the overall health of the county's citizens. This collaboration between various agencies will facilitate greater access to community resources that address many common issues, ranging from chemical dependency to domestic violence. The initiatives also seek to promote healthier living by removing advertisements for alcohol and tobacco products in major retail areas.
