ABOUT SHYAMALA

Shyamala Kiru has spent over a decade working with hundreds of individuals, couples and families. She is a Registered Psychotherapist and a Registered Marriage & Family Therapist. She holds a Masters in Counselling and a Doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy.  


In addition to her private practice, she is a consultant for the Health Services Team at a York Region Private School and is a media expert for sources such as Chatelaine, the Toronto Star, and the Globe and Mail. You can also find her the panel of Discovery Channel’s National TV show, Canada’s Worst Driver. She regularly delivers psycho-educational workshops as well as professional development for a variety of organizations.  She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Ontario Association for Marriage & Family Therapy. With an approach that is sensitive and down to earth, Shyamala brings authenticity and energy to her work with people of all cultures and backgrounds.

THERAPEUTIC APPROACH

Shyamala’s professional background includes non-profit work, educational and medical settings. Working from a systems perspective, her practice includes narrative therapy, emotionally-focused therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy. These models have been found to be some of the most effective in creating and sustaining long-term change.


MEDIA

Shyamala is part of the rehabilitation team on Discovery Channel's national TV show, Canada's Worst Driver. While at the rehabilitation centre, she provides one-on-one counselling to participants on issues that impair their driving such as anxiety, panic attacks, anger, low self-esteem and relational distress. In aiding participants gain the skills required to keep their calm and maintain their focus, she assists the rest of the panel in assessing their readiness to drive on public roads.

CONSULTING

Shyamala has played a vital role as a consultant for educational institutions, medical offices, naturopathic doctors, parishes and community agencies. She is currently part of the Health Services Team at Pickering College (York Region Private School) where she provides therapy for students and their parents, designs and delivers group programming, and consults with administration on issues such as bullying, self esteem, dating/relationships, anxiety and depression. She is well known for her collaborative approach and extensive knowledge of the social services system.
