Mental Health in Sault Ste Marie

Sault Ste. Marie has a lively senior citizen population, with more than 19.3 percent of its residents being age 65 or older. Though many seniors are in good health, it's not uncommon to experience a deterioration of function after age 65. According to the Canadian Hearing Society, nearly one out of every four adult Canadians report experiencing hearing loss. Ten percent identify themselves as deaf or hard of hearing.2 Aging is the number one cause of hearing loss, so it's no surprise that many of the citizens in Sault Ste. Marie have difficulty hearing conversations. Deafness and hearing loss makes it even more challenging to find mental health services.

The Canadian Hearing Society serves all of Ontario, including Sault Ste. Marie, to help people with hearing loss get the counseling services they most need. The services are free of charge and confidential. Professional therapists use American Sign Language (ASL) and other methods to communicate with clients. The counselors are able to treat those who've experienced depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse, domestic violence and other mental health challenges. For more information or to make an appointment, call 705-946-4320 extension 223.3

Current Initiatives

The Canadian Hearing Society is active in health initiatives that affect all who experience hearing loss, including those who suffer from mental illness or have mental health challenges. They have advocated via their Hearing Health Initiative for greater access to mental health care on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing Ontarians. Their partnership with CONNECT Mental Health Services is one of the services provided through this initiative.4
