Addiction is self-medicating the pain you do not want to face or deal with. The pain is usually from the trauma you have experienced in the past. Usually, people use 4 things to cope with the trauma: money, food, sex, and alcohol/substance abuse. As the result, people with addiction issues are often facing financial issues due to excessive spending, weight issues or eating disorders, sex addiction and alcohol/substance abuse issues. To battle the addiction means to face the past traumatic experiences and to find different ways to work through the pain. As your therapist, my role is to help you work through the past traumatic experiences and to find healthy ways to handle the pain.
