I like to work with clients, including adolescents, to help them on their journey to wellness as they overcome addictions. In addition to substance and alcohol addictions, I also like to work with clients who have addictions that are rooted in technology, such as addictions to video games, online chat rooms, video chatting, social media sites, and sexting.

The compulsion to repeat destructive habits brings shame, damages relationships, and controls our ability to live freely. It is possible to learn new coping, change habits and rewire your brain through a combination of personal work, hypnosis, and mindfulness. Freedom from self defeating and outdated coping habits is possible when you participate in a healing theraputic relationship. This is what I offer.

Like most people, therapist have their own set of addictions, and I must admit, I would probably classify myself as a "coffee addict." However, when addictions interfere with life including work, employment, and close relationships, there may be something more that needs to be addressed such as family history or patterns of addiction via therapy. I work with clients to help them establish different lifestyle choices, and how one lifestyle change can bring about a healthy "domino" effect in other aspects of their life.

Addiction is the symptom of a bigger problem. What is the bigger problem that leads one to the addiction? That is where therapy comes in. Addiction is complicated but it is what lead you there that is really the problem and is really what the person needs to work on to grow and change into a better person. I have seen people struggle with this over and over. When you can really look at what keeps a person stuck in addiction, and change that piece with them, is when you see success!

Dealing with an addiction can be very daunting and lonely. In therapy one primary focus is to provide a safe and comfortable environment that allows open dialogue for clients to express and share how addiction has negatively impacted various areas of their lives. In treatment I will collaborate with clients to develop a support group in addition to establishing realistic and achievable goals that are conducive to maintaining recovery. To schedule an appointment with Akeem call TR Counseling & Wellness at 203-819-7650.
