Addiction is often talked about in terms of a disease. Therefore, no real positive change is likely to occur without treatment. In my professional experience, most people develop an addiction as a means to cope with an entirely different problem. I believe addiction therapy then, is less about the problem behavior, and more about treating the original issue. For example, a person may drink or use drugs to numb the painful feelings of the abuse they encountered as a child. In addition to individual therapy sessions, I also offer substance abuse assessments for those than may be required to have one completed.

I approach grief and loss first and foremost with a great deal of respect. It is exceptionally painful to have the loss of control that addictions bring. Our society tends to vilify addiction and this does not align with my personal philosophy. I find most patients unconsciously use their addictions to keep painful emotions buried below the surface. I then try to encourage patients to face these emotions. Once emotions are out, they no longer drive us and we can be in control again.
