Michael Rivest, Ph.D., D.S.T.

Licensed Clinical Pastoral Counselor

Winston Salem, North Carolina 27103

A simple definition for an addiction is: something you cannot stop on your own that is hurting you and those around you. Most of my clients are sexual addicts that are hooked on internet pornography/ masturbation, or sexually inappropriate relationships. I can help you not only stop the addition and help you to develop good healthy relationships with others. Counseling does not take forever and you can walk away from it liking yourself and being a better problem solver. www.SexCounselors.org

Addiction involves more than a physical dependency on a drug. Even upon completion of treatment, you are at high risk of relapse when you are reintroduced to the stressors of the outside world including psychological and social factors that have a powerful effect. If you seek support/recovery and are searching for a non judgmental environment, contact me.

My approach to the treatment of addictions is unorthodox. I begin with the assumption that addictions originate with a person's attempt at solving a problem. Initially the addiction is only a small part of the puzzle until it grows to cause serious side effects. Underneath the addiction lies the root causes (e.g. stress, relationship issues, career challenges) and addictions are the way people cope. At some point, the addiction dominates; however, treatment should spend a significant time focusing on the underlying factors as well as the addiction cycle.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Sex addiction differs from any other addiction. Overcoming it is not as simple as going "cold turkey". It is about understanding where it originated for you and about learning to have a meaningful relationship with "sex". Most sex addicts enter treatment due to the fatigue of leading a "double life" or due to being caught by their loved one(s). This "bottom" is a fantastic motivator to change. Don't lose sight of what it can mean to be the person you know you want to be. Myself and the staff at Healing Solutions Counseling Center can provide the supportive services you need to heal from the inside out.

At the root of addiction is deep emotional pain. With that kind of pain, of course a person wants to "numb out" or forget for a little while. Others with that kind of pain distract themselves with busy-ness, taking care of everyone else (codependency), overworking, doing computer games excessively, gambling, viewing pornography, and countless other compulsive behaviors. Without treating the root cause-- deep emotional pain-- people with addictions will relapse again and again. Work with a therapist trained in EMDR trauma therapy to resolve the root cause. Nothing else works to resolve emotional trauma like EMDR therapy. Visit EMDRIA's website or give me a call to explain how it works.
