In my opinion addiction begins with anxiety which the person chooses at some level to ameliorate by the use of a substance or behavior. This may seem to suffice initially for uncomfortable feelings but, as the process of addiction continues, the means to gain relief adds to a persons anxiety exponentially. There is an imaginary line a person crosses when he/she develops a dependency on alcohol or other drugs and/or behaviors and once crossed, can not return to "normal" use of the substance or behavior.

Early treatment for addiction requires realistic assessment of the addictive behavior and often medical intervention and detox in the case of substance abuse. Current use of the term addiction often includes any compulsive behavior that impairs daily functioning or relationships. My role working with addiction comes in when the long path to recovery begins. Often I support the individual's work that may include specific interventions with other professionals. Addiction and addictive behavior rarely occur in isolation. Spouse, children, parents, friends, co-workers and others are deeply affected by individual addiction. Individuals and connections all need support.

John Caparisos, Ph.D.

Professional Counselor/ Marriage and Family Therapist

527 East 60th Street, Savannah, Georgia 31405

I work with those suffering from addiction problems as an adjunct counselor. Most of my clients with these problems are also in a helping organization such as AA. My approach to addictions is that they are responses to anxiety. I use energy techniques to help with cravings. I also encourage positive life-style changes. Often sessions in my office are excellent one on one supplements to the group experience and offer further accountability to clients.
