Addiction can be diagnosed for a variety of symptoms and for very different reasons. Most have heard of the 12 steps and their recovery model. I prefer to use the stages of change stemming from a technique called Motivational Interviewing. Through this model a client can be helped to develop a reason for change, their experiences are validated and they are encouraged to engage in self exploration. It is crucial for a person to understand not only that they have an addiction, but what benefit they are getting from these series of behaviors. Once this is highlighted, I can help them learn more appropriate ways to get these same benefits and develop a safety plan for the future.

People don't develop an addiction in a vacuum. Always, there is an effort to soothe, distract, or solve some sort of problem by self-medicating.
I believe people do the best they know how to do. Yet, when alcohol, drugs, other substances or habits cause us harm, it's time to look for different solutions.
I encourage use of AA and other 12-step groups. However, these may not be the (total) solution for everyone. Finding out what works for YOU is what is most critical.

I primarily work with couples who come to me where one partner is in some form of addictions counseling or has completed hospitalization for an addiction. Some couples come after years of recovery or because of a relapse situation which endangers their relationship together. And some clients come to see me to avoid seeing a professional addictions counselor since I'm not. My experience is that if they are truly addicted they'll see such a professional on my recommendation after having counseled with me. I have a range of referral sources in the addictions community.

Addiction is more than a behavioral problem. Dysfunctional brain circuitry changes are associated with the disease of addiction, impacting all realms of life: physical, psychological, emotional, and social. In addition to medical care, counseling is critical for recovery, relapse prevention, and re-creation of personal balance. Counseling will assist in addressing the psychological and social factors associated with relapse. Recovery and balance must integrate effectively adapting to typical life stress, environmental or situational triggers, and social networks. Counseling can help with other problems that contribute to addiction such as family, work, depression, or grief.

Addiction to any substance or behavior can have hugh consequences. Admitting that ones life is out of control is the first step to a successful recovery from any addiction. Learning new coping skills like mindfulness, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness and distress tolerance will equip the client with life long skills that will allow them to live a more fulfilled life. Many times addicts are not running toward something they are running from something. Uncovering what that is might be another key to a solid recovery.
