Twelve-step programs are extraordinarily helpful. They help addicts to understand their addictive behaviors and to develop long-term coping strategies. For over twenty years, in conjunction with Twelve-step programs, I have helped addicts to understand and work through the deep emotional feelings they experience in the recovery process. I work with both gay and straight people. Please visit my website lhorowitz.com for more information.

Addictions are a dependency; a belief that you have a need. You believe that you cannot feel or experience any happiness, joy, or even just feeling 'okay' unless you are in control of an external circumstance. For example, we believe that our body needs an excessive amount of food, and eating food, drinking a substance (Alcohol or Coffee), in contact with a friend, experiencing quiet. debilitating, regardless of whether we are talking about illegal drugs, like Cocaine, Heroin, Cannabis/Marijuana, legal drugs and substances, like Marijuana, Alcohol (Liquor, beer, wine, etc.)

Substance abuse and dependence can impact every aspect of person's life. A major issue with individuals who struggle with substance dependence is maintaining the motivation to change. I help people manage substance abuse issues by teaching relapse prevention skills and utilizing motivational enhancement techniques. I also teach clients how to manage substance abuse urges.

This is an area of treatment where I have seen many miracles. Successfully moving beyond substance dependence and abuse is not a matter of will power and character. Paradoxically, being strong willed and independent can work against recovery; addictions are very 'sticky' and five decades of research and experience confirms that attempting to keep them in check without help does not work. Twelve step programs (AA, NA, CA, etc) are the ‘gold standard’ of recovery, and are tried and true methods of achieving lasting abstinence. I possess a strong 12 Step program background, but know that not everybody can walk into a meeting and feel at home. Come for a consultation and see what is possible.

What addiction are you struggling with? Alcohol, drugs, sex? It doesn't matter what form it takes, it matters what it is doing to your life. If it has gotten out of control, that your addiction seems to be running your life and narrowing your options, psychotherapy with me could be the help you need. If you could fix it by thinking and figuring it out, you would have done that by now. So why not call me and set up a time to meet?

Addiction issues are wide and varied. Be it alcohol or drug abuse, gambling, food, sexualizing or the internet, substance and situational addictions can consume our lives. Part of the difficulty is understanding one's journey through the continuum of addiction...trying to understand where that shift materialized from indulgence to over-indulgence to true addiction. Besides a behavioral approach we need to understand why we entered this cycle of dependency. Once we begin to take our lives back we are on the road to independence and self regard, the two best weapons that protect us from returning to our addictive cycle.

Have you been struggling with one or more substances like alcohol or drugs? Do you feel like the substance is in control rather than you? Perhaps you have an activity interest that has taken over your life, like shopping, gambling, or pornography. Maybe you’re a workaholic. If you’re truly happy in that pursuit and don’t care how it affects your health or your loved ones, you may not need my help. If, on the other hand, your addiction has become a compulsion which is causing you significant interpersonal, family,or personal grief, I can help you conquer it. I’ve been doing so with others like you for over 25 years and almost all patients have referred a loved one or friend for my help.

The purpose of Addiction Counseling is to help the client identify for him or herself if there is an addiction present. If this is the case, a variety of cognitive behavioral techniques are utilized as well as mindfulness exercises to help with focusing and how to cope with difficult emotions in healthy ways to become abstinent. In addition, there is a focus on stengths, and what the client has done in the past to abstain from using the substance of choice. Thus, the client can try and implement at least some of these techniques again and stay away from triggers and past negative behaviors that led to relapse. There is also focus on self-esteem building and how to prevent relapse in the future once the client is abstinent.
