While my specialty is not in addiction treatment, turning toward substances or habits that create distance or provide exits from relationships is a behavior that I treat in individual, couple and family therapy. We will explore the underlying reasons, the positives and negatives of addictive behavior and our work will help you gain control and make choices that will repair connection to others.

Many people feel the negative after-effects of drinking alcohol, substance abuse and other addictions but are unaware that they have an addiction problem. In time, what starts out as an innocent social activity becomes a habit and then gradually crosses over into a physiological and psychological addiction causing havoc in your life. Sobriety is not easy, but it is possible with right treatment and commitment. spiral2grow, located in New York City, has the professional staff that meets the clients where they are emotionally and at their stage of the healing process to lead them to transformation, freedom and inner peace.

I've helped clients overcome the crippling effects of addiction and am experienced working with a variety of addictions: alcohol, drugs, food, internet and porn, gambling, shopping, and spending addictions. We'll work on behavioral controls, putting thoughts between feelings and addictive behaviors, psycho-education about the benefits of sober and abstinent behaviors, as well as reducing the self-esteem problems that can lead to addictive behavior. I am a supporter of 12 Step Programs but also realize that these don't work for everyone, and my focus is on helping you do what will work for YOU.

I help my clients become aware of how they protect against their feelings. These are called addictions We can use anything as an addiction if our intention is to avoid our feelings or to use something to make us feel worthy. I can help you manage the loneliness, helplessness and heartbreak that you may be avoiding with your addictions. Once you know you can handle your feelings then you no longer have to protect against them and can let go of your addiction.

The cycle of addiction is dizzying to the addict and it creates what I calling "doing" some forward movement in growth. And undoing. The old (by now probably moldy) undoing). The trapdoor for the addict is you know the drug offers relief. And since you live only in the hear and now (emotional and physical pain can cause that feeling) you want the instant relief that it seems only the drug gives you. My job is to gently and sometimes not so gently dispel you of this massive myth. What you really need is to learn to slow down by substitution of behaviors. It will be clearer when we meet.

The first question of anyone who would like Addictions Counseling is, why am I controlled by a substance? What stops me from stopping myself from using? Our work is complementary to Step Program work. Step Program work helps format a life so that daily living is productive, interactions with others are truthful, and promises are kept. Most often what drives someone to a substance is fear of knowing oneself. Somehow, early life conditioning developed the idea of the person having no value. This is a deeply painful concept to hold. To avoid or reduce the strength of this pain, a person distracts themselves by using. Our therapy reaches through the distractions to the truly beautiful You!
