Addiction is not a moral failing or a character defect. It is a real physiological need that can be very difficult to overcome. Some people find that they have become addicted to a substance due to having made unwise choices. Other may find themselves addicted through poor medication management. The issue is not how you became addicted, but rather to get about the work of understanding the addiction and recovery process. When you have a better understanding of how your brain is working to keep you addicted, you will be able to let go of guilt and shame and work toward full recovery. I will help you to find the support you need for recovery.

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques for the issue of addiction. We examine the behaviors and determine the thoughts and feelings that accompany the addictive behaviors. After determining the core belief that supports the client's negative patterns of behavior, we then investigate if those negative thought patterns continue to serve the client in the present and develop alternative thoughts and behaviors. I expect that the client is in some complementary support type system concurrently with individual therapy. At some point, I expect to develop a group session as well.

Addiction to any behavior or substance is a symptom of a deeper problem. Yes, when we medicate with anything too much, it becomes a problem. Numbing self from reality to escape is the number one, and socially acceptable in America today. Along with addiction comes shame, guilt, chaos in relationships, isolation, fear, depression, and unfortunately suicide. If you would like to get off of the crazy making cycle of your addiction, I can help.

I work with addicted clients in a private detox hospital setting, and also provide therapy for individuals with other issues such as anxiety, depression, Add, Adhd, and PTSD. These issues or often are related to or complicated by chemical dependence. I work with families who struggle with addictions or addicted loved ones.
I also work in tandem with physicians who prescribe Suboxone for outpatient Opiate detox. I lead support groups for Narcotic addictions, which are supportive of the 12 step program, but our group curriculum is based on Motivational Interviewing and is psycho educational.
Sher Ireland, M.Ed., M.S., CCDC, L.P.C.
I see all addictions as the means to making ourselves try to feel better, but the methodology always fails in the long run. People who medicate their feelings have a multitude of attachments to choose from, and all have their own particular way of coping but being addicted to a behavior or a substance always limits or eliminates our basic freedom. Having personal experience with addiction has helped me to understand and have compassion for others who struggle, and I take people where they are and practice harm reduction. I understand the stages of change, and have helped people find motivation to alter their behavior. I am a CCDC, but also help those with sex addictions and others.
Lynne Nesbit, M.S., N.C.C., L.P.C.
I have a deep and personal understanding of the devastating impact of addictions on our lives and relationships. I offer forthright, supportive counseling for those struggling with substance abuse and for loved ones impacted by addictions. I am very familiar with the work of Bill W., and encourage twelve-step work for my clients whose addiction issues would benefit from the program.
Aaron Potratz, LPC, MA, CADC-I
As a Certified Alcohol & Drug (CADC) counselor in Oregon, I have worked with clients and loved ones of those impacted by addiction using highly-researched and proven "cognitive-behavioral" approaches. By looking at belief systems and how one thinks, I help clients understand how these interact with their emotions and guide their behaviors in order to create new ways of thinking and behaving that are healthier and more effective for their life and relationships.

I have done a lot of work with people who have 3 months or more recovery from addictions and wish to maintain recovery and develop healthier life styles. I do not do 12 step work but rather try to on issues which are not always possible to address in a 12 step group. For people who see me with an active addiction I will refer them to treatment or 12 step. I do provide treatment for sex addicts. I believe that recovering addicts are some of the healthiest folk in soviet and that what makes for good recovery is a mixture of 12 step and therapy.
Christeine Terry, Ph.D.
I provide a non-confrontational and client-directed approach to addiction treatment. I work hard to understand a person's perspective, reason's for using, and where they are at in their process of change. A person's values are the central guiding principles in creating treatment goals that may involve abstinence, reducing use, or reducing harmful ways of using. I have experience and use evidence-based approaches to addiction treatment, but am able to tailor these approaches to best meet the needs of the person. I am supportive of 12-step approaches and SMART Recovery, and I am comfortable working with people who choose not to use these types of groups in their recovery.
