My approach to the treatment of addictions is unorthodox. I begin with the assumption that addictions originate with a person's attempt at solving a problem. Initially the addiction is only a small part of the puzzle until it grows to cause serious side effects. Underneath the addiction lies the root causes (e.g. stress, relationship issues, career challenges) and addictions are the way people cope. At some point, the addiction dominates; however, treatment should spend a significant time focusing on the underlying factors as well as the addiction cycle.
