I specifically work with the family members or partners of those who have a loved one struggling with addictive behavior of any kind, whether it be alcohol, sex, pornography, food, hoarding, drug use, gambling, etc. Addiction is a family problem, as it affects not only those struggling with the compulsions, but also the lives of those surrounding them. Therefore, those people surrounding them can play a crucial role to support health in their loved one's life, learn to protect themselves from the damage addiction can leave in its path and clarify ways to help (or not) in terms of effectiveness. It's tough watching your loved one struggle, don't do it alone!

For many people, painful, traumatic events have created coping mechanisms that are unhealthy. Sometimes these coping strategies come in the form of addictive behaviors. Whether chemical addictions, like alcohol or drugs, or "process" addictions like sex, gambling, or food addictions, these addictive behaviors are ways in which we "cope" with the stress and trauma of our lives. I offer to help not only find healing from the pain of the trauma, but also to learn new, healthy coping skills that enhance self and relationships.

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques for the issue of addiction. We examine the behaviors and determine the thoughts and feelings that accompany the addictive behaviors. After determining the core belief that supports the client's negative patterns of behavior, we then investigate if those negative thought patterns continue to serve the client in the present and develop alternative thoughts and behaviors. I expect that the client is in some complementary support type system concurrently with individual therapy. At some point, I expect to develop a group session as well.

While most treatment approaches to addiction include 12 step programs, rehabs, and now sober living houses, Grey Matters International, Inc. provides a wildly successful alternative to traditional models of addiction treatment----that keeps the brain in mind. That is, talking to the conscious brain while the primal brain is deciding things even before you are consciously aware? Well, that is the problem to solve in addiction. We have the solution utilizing a new cutting edge neuroscience-centered brain rebalancing system. Contact kevin@kevinflemingphd.com or call 877-606-6161.

Whether you’re struggling with alcohol, drugs, or some type of compulsive behavior (e.g., sex, relationships, eating, spending) you know how painful and difficult it can be to feel out of control. Fortunately, there is a lot that you can do to reverse this pattern. Processing trauma, shifting your belief system, and developing new skills and behaviors create a pathway to increased empowerment. I find Dr. Robert Miller’s Feeling-State Addiction Protocol, which uses EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing), to be very effective for working with addictive and compulsive behaviors. Imagine how it could feel if you – not the addictive behavior – were in charge of your life!

Do you feel out of control? Do you need more of a substance, person, or experience just to feel good? Is the rest of your life suffering because of it? Addiction can take many forms – from drugs and alcohol, to food, sex, relationships, even exercise. You might have a sense that something is off balance or tried to stop many times, and maybe even feel shame because of it. Your own honesty and reaching out for support is the best thing you can do for yourself. The point is not just to stop whatever has taken over your life, but to find out why it is there in the first place. This is how you can discover the real reward and sustainable healing potential within whatever addiction you are facing
