Addictions are tough to work through because when we're under pressure, our brains will signal that we need to get to the release valve and let off some steam. Addictions range from drugs, gambling, sex, shopping, porn, working too much, spending all of our free time watching TV, to video game addictions. It's whatever that release valve is that starts to interfere with other parts of our life. In working with addiction, I tend not to focus on the addiction, but the pressure that is building up to cause the addiction. For some people this is family, work, trauma, or just plain genetic predisposition.

In my approach to therapy for compulsive sexual behavior (aka sex or porn addiction), I help each client built a path to change and sobriety that allows for their own personal challenges and style. This individualized plan may include a relapse-prevention analysis, reading and journaling about addiction, regular 12-Step meetings and work, couples counseling, family of origin work, etc.

I see clients for treatment of alcohol and drug addictions, other substance abuse and problem gambling treatment.. Often the addiction is part of other problems in the client's life. Frequently, addictive behavior is at the root of marriage and family therapy. Unquestionably, when an addiction takes hold of a person, their entire life is impacted. Addiction treatment has the power to return control to the client and restore their life.

I do offer couples and families the chance to find healing in their relationships from the damage often caused by an addiction. Often in the treatment of addictions, the focus is on the individual and the partner and the relationship gets overlooked. The addiction of a romantic partner or family member can be incredibly painful and have a huge impact on their relationship with others. While I do not specialize in treating the addicted person, I will help couples to find new ways of interacting without the addiction and address issues of codependency to help you and your partner work towards creating a relationship free from substances and the patterns of addictive families.

I have a deep and personal understanding of the devastating impact of addictions on our lives and relationships. I offer forthright, supportive counseling for those struggling with substance abuse and for loved ones impacted by addictions. I am very familiar with the work of Bill W., and encourage twelve-step work for my clients whose addiction issues would benefit from the program.

Whether you’re struggling with alcohol, drugs, or some type of compulsive behavior (e.g., sex, relationships, eating, spending) you know how painful and difficult it can be to feel out of control. Fortunately, there is a lot that you can do to reverse this pattern. Processing trauma, shifting your belief system, and developing new skills and behaviors create a pathway to increased empowerment. I find Dr. Robert Miller’s Feeling-State Addiction Protocol, which uses EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing), to be very effective for working with addictive and compulsive behaviors. Imagine how it could feel if you – not the addictive behavior – were in charge of your life!

Do you feel out of control? Do you need more of a substance, person, or experience just to feel good? Is the rest of your life suffering because of it? Addiction can take many forms – from drugs and alcohol, to food, sex, relationships, even exercise. You might have a sense that something is off balance or tried to stop many times, and maybe even feel shame because of it. Your own honesty and reaching out for support is the best thing you can do for yourself. The point is not just to stop whatever has taken over your life, but to find out why it is there in the first place. This is how you can discover the real reward and sustainable healing potential within whatever addiction you are facing
