Miriam Davis, M.A., M.F.T.
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
Location: 2625 West Alameda Avenue, Suite 514, Burbank
I work with many individuals who have either identified themselves as having addiction problems or are still in denial that they have problems with addiction....either to substances or to certain destructive activities. Either way, I work with them so that they have a realistic understanding of the destructive consequences of their actions as well as an empathic awareness of the underlying self-destructive attitudes or beliefs (or life experiences) that may have led to their addictions. Addicts need support to deal with their addictions. There is no one way to get this support, but it is vital that addicts know that they they do need support...group support and psychotherapeutic support.

We are all addicted to something: drugs, alcohol, food, negative thinking, anger, shopping, etc. It all comes from the same place. We don't want to feel painful feelings. We want to numb out. But if you are an addict you know you are in pain already. Feelings those painful feeling frees you from the need to numb out. 12 Step programs don't work for everyone. I have helped many people overcome their addictions. I will help you find self acceptance and love so that you can overcome your addiction with compassion. It's a journey well worth taking.
Jeffrey Chernin, Ph.D., MFT
Location: 6310 San Vicente Blvd.Ste 410, Los Angeles
I used to run a clinic that is geared toward recovery from addiction. I offer many different approaches and tools for leaving your substance behind, and I tailor my approach to your individual circumstances. But overall I view addiction as a form of coping (a coping strategy), and we would work to replace your current coping strategy with other, more life-affirming ones. We wouldn't just look at staying sober (triggers, relapse prevention, scheduling--whatever you wanted in these areas), but we would figure out where all of this came from. Then, we would work together to find ways to help you to live a richer, fuller, and substance-free life.

Unfortunately, most people avoid seeking help until they run into trouble with the law and risk loosing their marriage and/or employment. Don't wait that long to ask for help.

Are you abusing, addicted, or not sure? Are you concerned about substances (alcohol, pot, cocaine, meth), behaviors (sex, porn, computers, gambling, spending, cutting), or both? Together, we can see if these issues are really a problem for you.
If you’re having problems in these areas, we can sort it out and deal with it. Some people benefit from 12-step programs, and others don’t want them. I can work either way. Together, we’ll see what triggers you, how you deal with them, what works, what doesn’t, what situations affect your using and not using, and how this ties in with your earlier life. We’ll see what helps you to cope, where that works and doesn’t, and what other options might be.
Gary Stollman, Ph.D.
Psychotherapist, Marriage Counselor, Professional Life Coach
Location: 260 S. Beverly Drive, Suite 300, Los Angeles
Any addiction is an attempt to deal with feelings that are unmanageable. The alcoholic turns to alcohol to escape problems at home or at work. The gambler turns to gambling to avoid uncomfortable feelings. The sex addict turns to sex to numb him or herself from other feelings. "Self-medicating" through addiction works in the short turn but always has a price attached to it. Together we can discover the underlying issues surrounding your addiction and work towards a life free of compelling urges you may find difficult to resist. Dr. Gary has been featured numerous times on the Dr. Phil show discussing addition. Type in "Dr. Phil and Dr. Gary Stollman" on youtube and watch his numerous videos.

The goal of treatment is learning how to cope with life and live your life w/out resorting to your "drug" of choice. Patience and tolerance with difficult feelings and emotions while you are developing the skills to cope with them, while reducing your dependence on your substance of choice is a core element of treatment. As you learn about yourself, and begin to be OK with who you are, and discover different ways of approaching things, you will develop the ability to cope and process things w/out having to constantly resort to misusing, drugs, alcohol and or food. It's a difficult road but I do my best to provide a safe and nurturing environment for this to occur.

My practice is mainly oriented toward helping individuals with behavioral addictions, rather than substance addictions. If you have behavior patterns that you dislike and would like to work on changing, I can help you to understand why they have developed and to develop more healthy replacement behaviors. Habits can be hard to change, but if you have a habit that is decreasing your quality of life, the time to start working on quitting is now. Habits only become more ingrained and thus more difficult to quit over time.

I worked, in previous years, at The Clare Foundation, an outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation center that specifically works with those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. My experience with the 12 steps has been foundational, but I feel the need for additional relational support throughout the struggles of addiction and an expansion upon these steps with additional integral interventions. Addiction can often feel like an endless marry-go-round, evoking feelings of frustration and anger, but with time, we have the strength and the power to overcome. With diligence and time, we can work through the underlying inhibitions to overcoming your addiction.
