It is important to look for antecedents to risky behavior - that is, what makes you more likely to repeat the addictive behavior. I can help in cases of milder substance abuse for those willing and able to cut down intake, and sex addiction (e.g., internet pornography, multiple partners). I can look at problematic behaviors associated with substance use and sex addiction that get in the way of important relationships. A prior history of criminal behavior or childhood sexual abuse requires another professional who has received special training in this area.

It is understandable that we might be drawn to a substance or behavior that promises quick relief from painful feelings. No one likes thinking they might be doing something over which they have no control But sometimes a combination of genetic, social and psychological factors may leave someone vulnerable to a dependency that takes them by surprise and seems to take on a life of its own. This is an area of treatment where I have seen many miracles. Successfully moving beyond substance dependence and abuse is not a matter of will power and character. Paradoxically, being strong willed and independent can work against recovery; addictions are very 'sticky' and five decades of research and experience confirms that attempting to keep them in check without help does not work.
Twelve step programs (AA, NA, CA, etc) are the ‘gold standard’ of recovery, and are tried and true methods of achieving lasting abstinence. I possess a strong 12 Step program background, but know that not everybody can walk into a meeting and feel at home. Come for a consultation and see what is possible.

Addiction issues are wide and varied. Be it alcohol or drug abuse, gambling, food, sexualizing or the internet, substance and situational addictions can consume our lives. Part of the difficulty is understanding one's journey through the continuum of addiction...trying to understand where that shift materialized from indulgence to over-indulgence to true addiction. Besides a behavioral approach we need to understand why we entered this cycle of dependency. Once we begin to take our lives back we are on the road to independence and self regard, the two best weapons that protect us from returning to our addictive cycle.
