I have worked wirh hundreds of substance abusers in the past, and I work with people who are abstinent and involved in a program such as AA or NA. Many times the substance abusers have an underlying psychiatric disorder and may be "self medicating" and I will make appropriate referrals for medication. All of the substance abusers that I have worked with have an underlying trauma or depression or unresolved grief.

Addiction is a catch-all term for a complex behavioral disorder. The most obvious symptom is that addicts reach a point where they cannot control their own actions. Even when they can see the harm, they continue the compulsive behavior. The inability to stop, more than any other attribute, marks addiction.
For this reason, addiction was first described as a failure of will power. We now know this is incorrect. Addiction is a real disease with psychological, genetic, and psychosocial aspects. It is not a character flaw or a failure of morality. There are actual changes that occur in the brains of addicts and treatments for addiction must address the biology behind the behavior.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Alcohol/Drug Counselor
Location: 311 E. Dickens Avenue, Northlake
Although substance abuse issues are primarily recognized as addictions, I am aware of the many other forms of addiction, such as gambling, sex, and internet. My philosophy is that any form of addiciton is simply a way for the individual to cope with their stressors. I would encourage the use of positive coping techniques; I would not be judgmental in any way. I believe that seeking assistance is a show of strength.

Howard Farkas, Ph.D.
Location: 155 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 760, Chicago
I use an original approach to the treatment of behavioral addictions, such as emotional eating, compulsive shopping and binge drinking. I believe that such behavior is not about the loss of self-control, but rather the need to feel that you are in charge of your behavior, even if that means the behavior is counterproductive. This results in engaging in such undesirable behaviors as a way of "proving" that you're really in control. This need to reassert control, which is not conscious, can be so strong that it can result in unwanted and self-defeating behavior.
