Rosemary Fromson, MPCP, RPC
Addiction is the symptom of the core issue. People who suffer with addiction often feel out of control, fractured, chaotic, and suffer guilt, shame, embarrassment, anger, and mental health issues. They often miss work or have relationship breakdowns. I work with people from a completely non-judgemental basis. Treating the whole person is essential to attaining a long lasting healthy life.

As a Psychologist specializing in the treatment of both substance addictions and behavioural addictions (e.g. gambling and sex), I employ an integration of modalities such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, motivational enhancement, mindfulness, and relapse prevention. I focus on treating each client where he or she is at, utilizing evidence-based approaches and collaborating with other health professionals, if necessary, to bring about the best outcomes. I address the many variables, such as poor coping, underlying depression/anxiety, and life stressors that contribute to the problem, emphasizing the development of enduring skills that will outlast the client's time in treatment.

Addictions develop because we want to feel better. The addictive behavior covers up our deeper feelings and needs. Counselling helps to uncover these deeper needs and to formulate a plan to meet those needs without the addiction. The plan includes identifying triggers, developing coping strategies for cravings and learning new more satisfying behaviors.

There is an interesting connection between trauma and addictions. When events or situations are perceived as life threatening or overwhelming (even though this might not be a conscious realization), the response to such overwhelming pain is logically to self-medicate. Treating addictions requires gently addressing how clients manage emotional, physical, and mental pain and sensitively building resources to find better coping strategies while healing old wounds.
Doug Hilton, RCC
I combine notions from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with Adlerian and Gestalt concepts. I draw on the 12 Steps terms and ideas that simplify the complex aspects of addiction. I match my approach to the client. I have detoxification equipment and techniques. At times I may use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to help people let go of pain from their past, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) to help them cope with the present, clinical hypnosis to help them train their minds for a healthy, confident and effective future, and Chi Kung meditations to help them strengthen, balance and detoxify their minds, bodies and spirits on an ongoing basis.
Devorah Peterson, M.Ed., RCC
My approach to addiction is multi-faceted and individually focused. Exploring personal history and trauma and grieving losses are often elements, as is reconnecting with the body and its wisdom. In many cases, developing one's spirituality is central to healing. I provide a safe environment for exploring and listening to the range of feelings that have been avoided through the addiction so that reconnection with self is restored and one's deepest longings can be satisfied.
Sandeep Nagra, M.A., CCC
Clients will benefit in many ways from treatment from me in the area of addictions. I use a non-judgemental approach, create a safe environment and work with you to achieve your goals. I often use a harm reduction approach to addictions. Together we create goals that are reasonabale and acheivable. Give me a call and we can talk, you have nothing to lose.

I have worked with clients with alcohol and drug abuse issues, and those also dealing with mental health issues alongside their addiction. I am able to support, address and help clients: devise a relapse prevention plan, assist in treatment plans and provide after-care services following a day or residential treatment program.
I have a particular interest in working with families, especially children and youth, impacted by addiction within the family system. I am able to assist the family system in dealing with a family member who is active in their addiction or in recovery and the impact each of these have on the family system.
Elaine Clark, BA. M.P.C.P.CCht
Addiction is a symptom, it is based on the belief that there is something wrong with me. The underlying cause of this behaviour is a feeling of hopelessness and helplessness. Once the belief in general unworthiness is corrected and replaced with loving acceptance, healing is inevitable. The belief in guilt and past behavior that is unforgiveable is an error that needs correcting, not punishing.

Linda uses a bio-psychosocial and spiritual approach to the treatment of all addictive behaviors. In a safe and supported environment you will learn how to experience your emotions without feeling overwhelmed by them (a key trigger for compulsive behaviors). Through mindful breath work , body awareness and self compassion, you can overcome past trauma and release the emotional blocks that keep you stuck in reactivity.
You will also learn how to release the shame that usually accompanies addiction and achieve a sense of self acceptance by re framing self defeating beliefs that have been trapped in the unconscious.
Ian Bond, M.A., R.C.C.
Ian offers effective professional therapy for addictions. He helps clients get to the core of the problem and reach their goals. This can involve many aspects such as working through traumatic experiences, learning to cope with stress more effectively, gaining education pieces about how to have a better relationship etc. Each client is unique. Please contact Ian if you would like a 30 minute consultation to briefly discuss your situation and how therapy can help.
Judy Lyon, MA, SFTT, MPCP #1883
With over two decades experience in addiction counselling, I can confirm that addiction has most often been a symptom of a greater underlying issue or problem. I work from a biopsychosocialspiritual philosophy, meaning I will take into consideration all of the various life factors that influence your addiction. While it may be necessary to explore family of origin issues or past traumatic events, I believe your point of power is in the present and will use treatment modalities that are the right fit for you to assist you to develop the skills to honor your past, while living in the present and transform the blocks that prevent you from living the life you deserve. Change is possible!
Anita Bloy, MA, RCC
Addictions begin as a way to hide from life. Addictive behaviours initially may help individuals cope with unpleasant and hurtful aspects of life, but they eventually limit that person's full and joyous experiences. Counselling helps individuals to embrace their life. Clients learn to slowly and safely take control of and full responsibility for themselves, including their past mistakes, their current struggles and their future hopes and dreams. They learn to replace their unhealthy addictions with healthy coping strategies which promote growth, self-esteem, and heart-felt connections.
Annette Kasahara, BA, MEd. (Psychology), RCC
My hope for clients facing challenges with addictions is that they will develop an openness and willingness to explore the underlying issues related to the addictive behaviours. Clients will benefit from looking at childhood factors and relationships issues, both past and present. Clients will identify any limiting and self-defeating beliefs which may have contributed to harmful and alienating behaviours. Clients will learn to replace negative thought and behaviour patterns with self-affirming thoughts and behaviours. They will also explore and create support systems. It is my hope that clients will develop greater self-acceptance and kindness to Self.
Sean Hassall, MA (Counselling Psychology) CCC, RCC
Has addiction taken hold of your life? Do you continue to relapse into certain behaviours, in spite of the negative consequences? You will benefit from an approach that integrates research-based practices (e.g., Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy), positive psychology (e.g., Hope Theory), wellness model, and meaning centred counselling. Services specialize in Process/Behavioural addictions (e.g., pornography, gambling, overspending, etc.).
Ted Leavitt, M.Sc., RCC
I have been working in the addiction field for many years now and recognize that there is a common theme underlying addictive behavior, whether it be substances or activities. The alcoholic and the workaholic both face the prospect of dying prematurely and alone, but society views one with scorn and one with admiration. Many people are reluctant to seek help for addictive behavior because they know someone else "has it worse". Don't let other people convince you that your problem isn't a big deal. If it matters to you, then it's worth talking about. I come from a place of compassion, non-judgment, and empathy, three ingredients missing in the lives of many people who struggle with addiction.
Shawn McNabb, B.A., M.Ed. (Counselling Psychology), R.C.C.
I find using Decision Balance Grids can be very helpful when one is looking at their addiction. This type of grid allows one to look at the benefits and concerns of doing or not doing a particular behaviour. This is important information for allowing someone to move forward around more proactive decisions. In counselling I like to help one explore their own value system to work alongside what is important to them when they are trying to move away and perhaps replace an addictive behaviour with a more positive lifestyle choice.

Real Solutions for Real Challenges Common Sense techniques. Short-Term & Cost Effective
Most often addictions are a symptom of pain. hurt , and loss of some form. The addiction serves to reduce this pain and suffering. However, the affect is has on the individual is to make them feel out of control, guilty, lazy, and generally worse about themselves whin in turn drives them to seek more relief.
This is often the downward spiral of the addiction cycle. Martin helps his clients reframe thier negative statements about themselves and then exposes the core beliefs that keep triggering their destructive and untrue beliefs about their whole character.

When we feel chronically empty or broken and unable to fix ourselves, we will do anything to avoid experiencing the resultant hurt, pain, anger, or boredom. What may be a harmless pastime for others becomes for us a destructive addiction. Feelings that compel addictive behaviour may be difficult to face, but there is hope for another way to live. My approach involves exploring current goals, relationships, family history, triggers, thoughts, as well as strengths, supports, and resources. I have successfully supported people, and their families, struggling with alcohol, drugs, internet, food, shopping, love, sex, pornography, and other addictions to live fuller, healthier and happier lives.
Kerry Moller, MA, RCC
We all find ways to protect ourselves from experiencing painful emotions, however, some people's coping mechanisms are more harmful than they are helpful. Addictions are commonly the route many people take to avoid feeling pain, but the cost to the rest of their life is tremendous.
In my work with addiction, I support clients in getting out of their habitual patterns of relying on an outside fix (whether it be food, alcohol, drugs, sex, and the like), and find the strength, personal conviction and self-love to live a less self-destructive life and find healthier ways of coping with life's many challenges.

Addiction to alcohol, drugs, or any behavior that creates a desired mood change, is a complex and confounding condition. My work in this field for more than two decades has taught me that there is no one magic solution - and that changing behavior without addressing the psychological and spiritual needs met by the addiction is not lasting recovery. With a supportive and non-judgmental approach, both to you who are struggling to overcome a compulsion, and to you who are affected by someone's addiction, I bring experience and sanity to the process of recovery. I also offer a 12 week Moderated Drinking Program that helps determine if you are misusing alcohol or if you are addicted.
Gayle Way, Ph.D., R., Psych.
A core issue in the tenacious root of addiction is the fear of pain. "I'm afraid of the pain, I'm afraid of the pain", might be considered the addict's key refrain. I practice a psychoenergetic approach to addiction which, in removing the fear factor from the cell, removes the trigger and, thus, the motivating habit which drives addictive behaviour.

Have you ever had fresh baking in the house that were saving for Christmas or some other celebration? You had to stop yourself from eating it. How it called your name while you were watching TV, or sent visions of sugar plums dancing in your head while you were hungry cooking dinner? Well that is a small snap shot of the feeling of addiction. Having such a strong compelling desire to experience the rewarding outcome, regardless of how short-lived it might be. Well not all compulsions ( or addictions) are only as dangerous and life changing as a 5 lb weight gain encountered by January 2. Some addictions can own us to the point that there is nothing left of who we really are, or were.

I have 30 years of experience helping individuals and families struggling with addictions of all kinds. Over the years my methods have changed dramatically. At one time, we used the "scruff of the neck" technique....picking someone up and dragging them to a treatment centre or a 12 Step meeting. Now I'm much more sophisticated in my approach...meeting a client or family at the point they are at. First we assess readiness, then we explore their specific needs, and then we develop a plan together. I find when I work collaboratively I get much better results!

I offer non-judgemental and compassionate support for clients who are struggling to overcome addictions and/or compulsive behaviours such as substance misuse, sex addiction or problem gambling, as well as for those impacted by other's addictions. Gently and respectfully, we work with the wisdom of the body to find your life back. We work to develop a strong observer self, as it allows you to notice yourself as separate from your feelings and experience and is critical for emotional safety and growth. Sometimes, just learning how to bring awareness and presence into your body can be a profound and helpful experience. If you are using a 12 step program, you may learn a process called 'focusing', to enrich and enhance progress.

Individuals struggling with addiction issues don’t get much sympathy in our society. That can make it hard to seek help. But, by identifying underlying problems and situations, it becomes possible to understand addictions and take action. We will help you manage your own destructive behavior patterns and offer ways to address them in the long term. Let us show you how to build a positive environment that makes change possible. With our support, caring, and non-judgmental approach you can take back your life.
Barbara Ohori, RPC
Drugs, alchol, food ,sex, gambeling...these do not cause addiction. Many people use or have used these in their life and do not become addicted. Some people are much more vunerable to addiction than others. I understand this and work form a bio/phycho/social and mostly spiritual model.
I have worked for many years with people in recovery...YOU can recover and re build your life now, you can have the life you deserve. If you or a loved one is suffering because of addiction please call me or go to any AA NA or ALONON meeting that you can.

The impact of an addiction in your life can be devastating. Addiction can ruin relationships, cause chaos and despair, break trust and make you do things you thought you would never do. Part of the counselling process is accepting that an addiction can control your life and cause destruction at every turn. Accepting the impact provides you with the opportunity to find ways to empower yourself to create a life without the use of a substance to manage life; a life where you are the one in control!
Natalie Hansen, M.A., RCC
Are you finding yourself using substances, internet or other things in unhealthy ways? Are you using things more and more to cope, rather than finding other ways to manage stress? Is your addictive behavior creating problems in your work or relationships? Are other people telling you that you have a problem with addiction?
