Addictions take a real toll on life, in all areas of it. After graduate school, I kind of "fell into" work on addictions. Since then, I have seen people in all parts of recovery and everywhere in the system. I have worked at homeless shelters and I have seen clients who seem to be "at the top of their game". My experiences led me to write a book, "Getting Your Life Together", and I have been fortunate enough to teach addictions at a Community College in Connecticut. I have been successful mostly by listening to addicts and their families and supporting that experience with education about addictions. Things can and do turn around. Recovery is possible.

Addiction is a broad based term. When I use it, I include alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, food, and the internet. These addictions are all characterized by obsessions about use, compulsive acting out, and downward progression in the individuals's life. Treatment begins with the person seeing that they have a problem, which is not always easy. The next step is developing a plan to help the person stop the addiction. Much care has to be taken to address the issues of staying stopped. These include triggers and lifestyle changes. The addict also has to develop or re-engage with support systems. I help someone with all of these steps.

Our culture promotes addictive habits. Addictions are an attempt to alleviate the emptiness and loneliness that so many of us feel. Sexually compulsive habits, like internet porn, or repetitive and undesirable sexual practices are but a few examples. I don't think we have sexual addictions because they "feel good." I think addictions actually cause us to feel pretty bad about ourselves. But there are no short-cuts. Our lives can take a decided turn for the better, including more passionate sex with our life partner, more meaningful interactions with others, and a deeper, more respectful way of relating. Otherwise, the emptiness gets filled in destructive ways.
