There are a variety of commonalities to all addictions. In my work with you, I will help you to identify what triggers your addictive behaviour and how to manage your temptation. I will educate you on what is considered a healthy relationship to your addiction of choice. You will also be connected to a series of resources outside of the therapy for additional support. Our work will also focus on helping you to develop a relationship to yourself, so that you learn to love, like and accept yourself.

Are you experiencing difficulties with alcohol and substance use or abuse? Are you concerned that you have an addiction? Perhaps you are family member or friend who is concerned that someone close to you has an addiction. In therapy, we can explore your alcohol or drug use and its impact on your life and relationships. Together we can look at what decisions might be beneficial for you and your goals and we can work to unearth what is underlying some of the choices you have made and continue to make in your life. As a non-judgmental, caring professional, I can work with you to help reach the goals you set for yourself. I provide support and guidance to concerned family members and friends.
Bruce Cook, M.A., C. Psych. Assoc.
My approach to addiction is to validate the clients strengths. I do not view addiction as a weakness or illness. I see addiction as a coping mechanism that has been overlearned in response to a deep-seated pain. Usually people develop addictions to combat their own compulsivity or to control their personal internal pain. I feel that by addressing the coping mechanism and establishing new and healthy coping mechanism, along with focusing on the personal difficulties and pain that the person may need to address is also important.

I utilize Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) in treating persons with drug and alcohol addiction. This treatment strategy does not attempt to guide and train the client step by step, through recovery, but rather employs motivational strategies to mobilize the client's own change resources.
The approach involves working with the client to help them achieve their preferred vision of the future. Once this is achieved, the client is supported in achieving (a) future goals and (b) recognizing times, places, and circumstances when the challenged was reduced in the past and
utilizing them as a strategy to achieve future goals.
Ron Wyse, DD, ThM, MDiv, BA
We can get adicted to anything that makes us feel good! Especially living in an addictively oriented society, it is easy for anyone to become addicted to a variety of things, like substances, relationships, processes, etc. I help people understand the porcess of addictions, and together we can work to overcome both the addiction itself, as well as learning to deal with any deeper desires which might be feeding it. The goal is to be able to life with, or through, the good and the bad without getting stuck in unhelpful ways of coping with life's challenges.
Bernie Golden, RIHR
Bernie believes that the treatment of addictions goes beyond simply treating the dependence on a substance or a behaviour. It is essential to treat the underlying factors that led to the addiction. The treatment of the underlying issues is the key to long term recovery.
Bernie works with people who are experiencing: substance abuse, porn addiction, gambling, sex addiction and other process addictions.
Please note that in substance abuse cases it is important to seek medical assistance if detox is needed and or to help manage withdrawal symptoms.
Lesli Musicar, M.Ed., Counselling Psychology
Using substances or activities that put us in an altered state is a way of trying to escape ourselves. We do these things for good reason, but we don't always know why. This is where I come in. I will help you to find alternative ways of calming and nurturing yourself. I will help you get control over your life. Together, we will face those demons you are running from. And with my support, you will learn to be a good parent to yourself. As you repair your relationship with yourself, your relationships with others will grow. You will no longer feel banished to a lonely world of one. You will once again feel connected to yourself and to the wider community that surrounds you.
David Fairweather
As smart as we humans are, we can so easily fall into habits and addictions that defy reason and rationale, yet every habit is born from a positive intent. From my deep understanding of classical conditioning and behavioral change, I can help you to uncover the origins of your addiction and work to break free once and for all. I currently have a 90% success rate for smoking cessation using hypnosis using methods that are tailored specifically to each of my clients, since I truly believe that one size does not fit all. Are you ready to get the help you need?
Douglas Lane Smith, B.A, M.A., Ph.D., C.Psych.
Dr. Smith has spent the last 3 decades removing his own addictions to smoking, alcohol, sweets and anger along with hundreds of clients in the same and added areas. Dr. Smith believes that it takes one to know one and that you can't fake it if you ain't been there before. Dr. Smith's approach is practical, effective and field tested. Dr. Smith knows that addictions are tied to deeply buried emotional wounds and they need to be excavated, accepted and chipped away until healthy substitutes are cultivated and installed.
Ema Nardella, M.ED., T.C., S.S.C.
I encourage clients to utilize other support systems in addition to individual therapy to maximize gains in combating various forms of addiction. With client permission, I bridge communication channels with other professionals/support people. Addictions may mean a block in the client's spiritual connection/purpose. Within a regression context & via identifying attachment issues clients can get through unconscious blocks. Sometimes compulsive symptoms, eg.crossdressing may be an authentic expression of an inner potentiality & therapy works towards greater self acceptance & worth.

Addiction is devastating. It’s devastating to the one struggling with addiction and to all those that are being affected by it. I understand that people aren’t cookie cutter images of one another. That’s why I believe in providing clients with a tailor made approach. One that takes into account your unique struggles. Clients are reinvigorated by my individualized approach, they leave my office feeling lighter and less burdened , and that’s the point of therapy!

While I do not work with people struggling with addictions, I provide support and guidance for members of their families. Often as the spouse, parent or sibling of someone struggling with drug or alcohol addiction we find our own lives spinning out of control. We find ourselves enabling and rescuing - hating that we do and yet not knowing how else to respond to the chaos. Counselling can help to reestablish a sense of stability and clarity about next steps. A counselling session for individuals, parents or all family members can provide perspective, guidance and skills to help family members make choices and take actions that are helpful for themselves and often for the one in addiction.

Addictions develop over time as a way of coping with life. We can get addicted to any substance or activity that has the power to elevate our mood. What begins as free choice ends in the prison of compulsive activity that has painful consequences. Addictions are dealt with best by a combination of a supportive group experience (like AA) and psychosocial counseling or therapy. When you come for counseling to deal with an addiction, you will find that we first will work together to end the addictive behavior. This will include accessing the support of a group. Then we will work together to understand how and why you developed this way of coping and to establish alternate, more effective, ways

Addictions work must take into account early experiences, early learning, current reinforces and social factors, as well as biological ones. I integrate this knowledge, using a motivational enhancing approach to help clients progress through difficult changes to make their lives better. Often we need to go through some emotions that may have been avoided, and that can cause anxiety. I'm fully aware of these issues and support my clients through these changes. The focus is on new, healthy ways of feeling and living.

Addictions are caused through habit formation. I will facilitate your process into a healthier YOU. We will discover your habits, and patter formation. Certain Behaviours cause certain Thoughts and Feelings. All of this needs to be understood and discovered. I will guide you through strategies in which a person-centered approach will be most useful. We need to substitute your addiction with a healthy alternative. We will look at your current situation and adjust minor details to bring about efficient positive change in a quick way. Ultimately the addiction will be eradicated and replaced with a positive habit that will reinforce your wellness and mental-spiritual-physical growth.
Sandra Lewis, MA, EFT-Adv., SFBT, OSP, OACCPP
I have worked with every kind of addiction in my 15 years of practice, including gambling and internet addictions, porn and sex addictions, substance addictions (cigarettes, food, alcohol, drugs) and shopping addictions. I even worked with a fruit addiction which was eliminated in one session.
The desire for the addiction can be dealt with quickly, often in one session, using EFT. The underlying cause of the addiction can take longer to heal, using both EFT and CBT. By longer, I mean a matter of weeks.

The Clinic' approach includes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is frequently used for treating addictions. This approach typically initially emphasizes increasing the client’s knowledge about their specific concerns, such as how certain situations and activities increase the risk of relapse (i.e. many people smoke a cigarette with drinking coffee, so drinking coffee can trigger cravings), as well as a focus on increasing their immediate coping strategies (such as relaxation training and sleep hygiene).

If you're concerned about your level of alcohol or drug use but don't think a 12-step or residential program is right for you, I can help you reduce your alcohol or drug use to a level you're more comfortable with, or quit altogether. I've worked with many people who don't consider themselves alcoholics or addicts, but who wanted to make some changes in their alcohol or drug use. I can help you deal with issues like stress, anxiety, depression, anger, self-esteem or shyness that can be the biggest barriers to reducing or quitting drinking or drug use. Leanring to dealt with these issues makes your goals for alcohol or drug use, and for your life in general, much more possible to achieve.

In my approach to addictions I work with clients to understand how the addiction may be helping them to cope and help them to learn alternate healthy coping mechanisms. Addressing related underlying issues may also be important in helping clients to leave the addiction behind. Although clients often find it difficult to let go of the addiction, they slowly feel ready as they begin to take steps and have more positive life experiences, which are also explored during therapy. Client strengths, motivations, hopes, and values are also considered and through these approaches clients begin to feel safe, satisfied, and happy living their life without the addiction.
Mitra Gholamain, Ph.D. C. Psych
Many research studies have confirmed that addictive behaviours are usually caused by underlying feelings of anxiety. In other words, if you have developed an addictive behaviour (i. gambling, substance dependency, etc), there is great likelihood that you experience excess feelings of worry and anxiety. Psychotherapy can specifically offer you startegies to manage the addictive behaviour while helping reduce the feelings of anxiety that fuel and perpetuate the addictive behaviour. Typically therapeutic modalities that help anxiety management (Cognitive-behavioural therapy and EMDR,etc) have promising effects on treating various types of addiction.

I work with couples dealing with addiction in order utilize one of the most important allies in an addict's support system, their spouse. This is possible only if there is adequate safety within the coupe and if the person with the addiction is willing to get individual support for the personal work required. I help the couple talk about their feelings and what they need, to understand each other and how to best support each other. If there are unhealthy dynamics in the couple, I help identify what these are and to make the changes necessary for healthier interaction and a stronger emotional connection.

I have previously worked in the feild of substance abuse. I use a harm reduction philosophy and provide an empathic environment for you to process your pain/emotions. I also help people co-create a plan to reduce their use or change their use for the better that is best for them. Many people with substance abuse difficulties also have mental health issues which I can also help with. I can also assit with co-creating a relapse prevention plan.
Todd Hayen, MA, MACS, CHt
Along with a more conventional form of therapy for addictions, I will also focus on the cause of addictive behavior and will utilize less conventional methods of ferreting out the conditions, criteria, and even purpose (how does addictive behavior benefit you?) behind the behavior. Addictions are a complicated issue, and the more the client understands the deeply rooted causes of their behavior the better chance he or she may have in controlling the condition. It isn't just about stopping the behavior but discovering the meaning behind the choices being made.

If we do something repeatedly, that we would rather not do, then we have an addiction. The problem with addictions is that people get hurt. The addicted person may not recognize the seriousness of their situation, but eventually both the addict and their loved ones suffer tremendously in a state of helplessness. Many families have been destroyed from addictive behaviour such as substance addiction (drugs/alcohol), gambling, sexual addictions, gaming/internet addictions. A counsellor can help. Workshops, groups, individual or family counselling can assist in breaking the devastating cycle of addiction. Coping skills and emotional awareness to negotiate compelling urges and compulsive in
