Anger can be toxic - to jobs, relationships, and especially to yourself. Usually beneath the anger are underlying issues of fear, anxiety, hurt, and/or depression. I'll help you identify what the anger is really about, and we'll look at ways to address the underlying issues and teach you how to manage and even eliminate your angry outbursts, by replacing them with more appropriate responses.

Anger management is a therapeutic approach to help a person learn tools for managing anger, for keeping it under control. My approach is to, along with this, also address what you are is angry about and work to understand and get at the source of the anger. That is, I see anger to a symptom more than the problem itself and therapy helps by you not only to manage your anger by using anger management tools, but more importantly to deal with what you are actually about in the first place and resolve and heal this.

Anger is a normal emotion that lets us know when we are hurting. Our therapy together focuses on learning how to express anger in appropriate and healthy ways. Keeping anger bottled up or lashing out at others negatively affect us and our relationships. Changing these destructive patterns will allow us to experience the full range of healthy feelings.

If your anger seems out of proportion to the situations that trigger it, or if your anger is hurting you or people you love, therapy may be able to help you regain a sense of control. I will not ask you to simply stop being angry, because I believe you have good reasons for your anger. I will help you figure out where the intensity comes from and learn ways of expressing your anger appropriately, to do good rather than harm. For example, a feelings of shame or inadequacy may trigger your anger; or it may be feeling vulnerable or hurt. Learning to recognize what triggers your anger and ways of solving those problems or coping with those triggers can help you take control again.

Anger is a strong feeling that is normal and usual. Many of us never learnt how to express our anger in a way that was productive for us and those around us. My aim is to help you become aware of the signs and symptoms of your anger, and identify coping skills that will help you express your anger in a more acceptable way and which feel appropriate for you. I will help you to practice these newly learnt skills in the safety of my office where we can review how these skills are working for you. We can also work on expressing all the pent up anger that could have built up over many years as a result of childhood/adult traumas and difficulties.

Let’s face it, life can often be quite frustrating!! With so much going on every day, the sources of anger are endless, (a difficult boss, bills you can’t pay or disagreeing with your spouse yet again). Everyone expresses anger in their own way. If you are like a lot of people, you bottle up your anger and then something happens that to others seems like no big deal but to you it is just the “tip of the iceberg”. Before you know it, you are saying things you don’t mean and can never take back. In therapy, we can work together to help you learn to recognize what sets you off, how to best deal with it and how to say what you feel without hurting the ones you love the most!

Anger only is the 'top of the volcano'. What I really find important for my clients is to understand the underlying issues and emotions that fuel the volcano. I am approaching anger management from three angles: 1) Anger is a strong physical reaction and I consider it essential for my clients to learn relaxation practices to stay in touch with their calm. 2)Anger is fueled by destructive and often self-destructive thoughts and I believe that it is very helpful for clients to be able to identify and shift these thoughts. 3) Anger is defensive emotion and it is essential for clients to gain access to their deeper emotions in order to self-soothe.

Anger management problems are often due to another underlying problem. Many people "hold in" and stifle their anger again and again - until finally there is a Mt. Vesuvius style eruption. The key is in learning to address issues earlier in the game to prevent the build up of resentment. Susan helps people learn to express their feelings appropriately and to set and maintain boundaries. Many people find that with attention to these new skills, they are able to prevent inappropriate "explosions" of anger. Some people have a history of deeply hurt feelings underlying the anger outbursts, and these feelings need to be expressed and healed to prevent difficulty with anger outbursts.

Anger is a very normal emotion, but has to be managed carefully so as not to cause damage to relationships. In working with individuals who have difficulty managing their anger, I help develop strategies to recognize the anger before it "boils over", and find appropriate ways to express the anger and reduce the liklihood of it recurring. Without dealing with the anger, people often develop problems with depression, or express the anger in ways that get themselves in to trouble.
