We're born with anger, just as we're born with other emotions. We are not born with rage. Rage happens when anger and resentment build up over a period of time. My clinical approach in treating anger is informed by the precepts of Acceptance Commitment Therapy, where all inner experience is mindfully witnessed and accepted without avoidance or resistance. What clients do behaviorally is informed by fully explored life values, as opposed to "reacting" out of the difficult emotion. Clients learn that anger is a helpful emotion when channeled in a life affirming direction. They learn about the neurobiology of anger and how to build in a "pause" before behaving, so that they can choose the most adaptive coping solution, inspired by the more highly evolved places in the brain.
