I believe anger is almost always a secondary emotion which masks deeper feelings of sadness, fear, frustration, or insecurity. If you are have anger management difficulties, I can assist you in getting to the root issue(s) and improving your social relationships. Unresolved relational pain is often the cause of ongoing anger problems. Exploring trauma or unresolved issues from the past in a safe, supportive environment, can reduce anger and help you restore or increase trust in your relationships with family and friends.

Anger is a basic human emotion that is used mostly when we feel threatened, harmed, betrayed, or disrespected. However, the extent to which we use anger is based upon attitude. Having an unsympathetic view of the world can cause you to quickly jump to conclusions that produce unpleasant results. My approach to anger management helps my client identify triggers to their anger in order to be able to avoid or defuse them rather than automatically react to them. To learn coping skills that will help reduce the level of stress in their lives and to practice being assertive, not aggressive in order to remain in control of their feelings.

One of the first steps in working with chronic anger and irritability is to rule out factors such as depression or even brain trauma and dementia. Once those factors are ruled out, it is important to look for patterns when anger flareups occur, and to increase awareness of "early warning signs" and retrain the body to respond to symptoms of "flooding" (increased blood pressure, heart rate, etc.) with calming strategies (deep breathing exercises and mindfullness practices). Finally, looking at thoughts and beliefs that contribute to feeling angry can help change the frequency and intensity of anger.

People who have "anger problems" get a bad reputation and this can have quite a stigma. We know that people who struggle with anger aren't bad people. In fact, typically, people who struggle with managing their anger are overly stressed and overwhelmed. We will help you find the underlying causes of your anger, address those causes, and prevent your anger.

Anger is good! This may seem contrary to what you've always believed about anger. You've probably spent a lot of time and energy trying to get rid of it. That would be a big mistake. Did you know that God was angry at times? If God was angry, how could it be wrong to feel anger? I propose the issue is not in the emotion itself, but in how we express it. You'll benefit from counseling for anger issues by learning healthy ways to use your anger, becoming more emotionally insightful, and developing skills to become connected deeper relationally.

Anger is not a ‘bad’ emotion. There is no such thing as a ‘bad’ emotion. However, Anger usually gets a bad reputation. Like many emotions, the intensity behind Anger can cause it to feel overwhelming or out of control. I help patients look at what is triggering the intensity of their Anger, and review techniques of how to manage this emotion in healthy ways. Sometimes Anger masks other feelings—like fear, hurt, shame or guilt. I help patients learn about themselves—learn about their emotions—and help them develop the skills and abilities to manage all of their feelings in healthy ways.
