Registered Counselling Therapist / Registered Art Therapist

3621 Dutch Village Road, Halifax, NS B3N 2T1

I have broad & particular experience with mental health issues with adults and with children. I have also taken intensive life skills coach training – relevant to group work, rehabilitation, attending to feelings such as anger, handling stress, and so on – that is also fitting with core issues and basic needs. I think that anger is a problem when inappropriately expressed but it often reflects unmet needs. I am influenced by reality therapy and believe that people are responsible for their actions. Yet validation & acknowledgement are also important. I integrate art therapy, in particular, because symbolic language allows safe expression of feelings & promotes resilience & new ways to cope.

Anger is a natural response to situations that upset or threaten us. Anger in itself is not bad but it is how we express it that can lead to problems. We can damage our relationships and get into trouble with the law if we release our anger inappropriately. We may use anger to frighten and control other people. Anger can make us physically sick. Anger management counseling will include looking at your anger patterns, identifying the triggers and coaching you in appropriate anger release techniques. To understand your anger better we will look at the story of your life from your earliest memory. You will be happier and healthier when you show better control of your reactions when you are upset

Rage is extremely seductive. It makes us feel right when it is most inappropriate. While anger, like sadness or happiness, is a natural emotion, it does not give us a license to hurt people. Many people deny or are quite unaware of their anger, but when it grows into rage it can lead to problems at work and at home. Anger turned outward can leads to emotional outbursts and conflict, while turned inward it tends to lead to depression. Jungian psychotherapeutic counselling helps us to understand the roots of your anger, to help you to develop more self-understanding and make better choices. I do anger management counselling locally in Halifax, Nova Scotia and also by e-counselling.

Anger has an important message: we are hurting. I help clients learn what's needed to feel healthy and whole without relying on anger. Anger responses can feel very deep rooted but brain science tells us that these responses can be changed - don't despair! If you are motivated to learn new ways of relating to yourself and others, you can! I assist clients to value the messages underneath the anger, and to increase self-compassion and gentle connections with others. I bring you a choice of evidence-based options for peace, safety and growth. I support you toward building new positive ways of expression and making social connections.

Some people need to learn skills to learn to manage their anger. They need to learn how to delay gratification, how to distract themselves from angry thoughts, remove themselves from situations that are triggering them, etc. However, with over 30 years experience as a therapist I have found that often the problem is not so much managing the anger as answering questions like "Why am I so angry?" or "What about this situation is triggering my anger?" Talk therapy is ideally suited to looking into these questions (as well as teaching coping skills to handle the anger). If you have been told you have anger problems or are worried you might have anger problems consider calling for an assessment
