Anger is often a response to an event, person or situation that causes us humiliation, rejection or a loss of power and control. By understanding the complexity of anger, from the triggers, to the underlying issues, to the way it sabotages our lives, you can learn to understand yourself better, as well as control and change your negative thinking patterns. This will help you to learn better coping strategies that will translate to many situations in your life, to function more appropriately and to become a better problem solver. Your goal is to control your anger, not let it control you.

In my experience of conducting the Men's Anti-violence groups, I can help with "self-regulation" of negative and highly charged feelings of anger and resentment, both in intimate family and work-related areas. My focus is to help people with a "hot-temper" or "short-fuse" by identifying and isolating feelings that may originate and reside in negative family dynamics where "injustice" and unfairness often are at the root of such "pent-up" unexpressed feelings. Or, you were "not allowed" to express such natural and valid feelings. Effective new "habits" are learned as are ways to "control" this reflexive and impulsive behaviour. I have seen positive and healthy change come about as a result.

Anger is one of the basic emotions experienced across the lifespan which we are generally able to work through. However, at times anger can take control; being always present or intermittent and explosive. It can affect daily lives, relationships and commitments. Anger is often a sign of underlying issues. I support children, teens, and adults (parents) to gain an understanding of the triggers and patterns of anger, develop healthy ways of expressing anger, and work through underlying issues. In addition as anger is often relationship based, helping parent/child; parent/teen or adult partners develop healthy relationships promotes positive expression of anger.

Anger is like an iceberg. It is only the tip. The other nine-tenths remains hidden and unknown. We need to connect with the nine-tenths, or the primary feelings such as hurt, pain, guilt, shame and fear. I will work with you to unearth your primary feelings and to devise alternative ways to manage your feelings. A good book for you to read is Hold Me Tight by Susan Johnson, especially the chapter "Recognizing the Demon Dialogues."

Feelings of anger are normal reactions to some situations beyond your control. These feelings may also indicate that you are stressed. It is important to deal with your anger before it causes you discomfort or pain. It can create problems at work and personal relationships, and influence quality of your life. Anger can be unpredictable and powerful emotion.

Having feelings of anger, yet exercising behavior that is respectful of others and solves problems is the desired goal of anger management. With this in mind, I help clients to learn what triggers their anger, and how to regulate expressions of anger and related behavior. Some of the common triggers for anger include hurt, frustration and fear. What is unhealthy is the tendency to blame others for these triggers and believe that you have the right to express yourself in an aggressive manner. Only you are responsible for your life.

Anger is a completely normal, often healthy human emotion. But if it gets beyond your control, it can be very destructive in your work and interpersonal relationships and can drastically devastate the quality of your life. Fortunately, anger can be 'managed' which is very different than 'suppressing' it. Unexpressed anger leads to a host of other problems including high blood pressure. However, when we learn how to 'manage' our anger, we can learn to diminish both the emotional feelings and the physiological arousal that anger causes. We can learn to avoid triggers and develop strategies. We can learn how to problem solve, change our thinking and relax our bodies.
