Anger can be viewed as an overwhelm to ones internal experience. Healing is not about not feeling angry, it’s about being able to manage and regulate the sensations, thoughts and actions associated with the intense emotion of anger.
I use Somatic Experiencing® to help the person who easily overwhelms to slow his/her internal experience so that he/she can locate, identify and transform the overwhelming sensations associated with the arising anger. As a skilled therapist, I help you first to identify what you are feeling, accept your feelings and then show you how to slow your internal experience so that the words just flow.

Anger is a feeling that carries information for teens. Anger alerts teens to the awareness that they feel threatened in some way. Teens often get angry because they are in emotional pain. Often, they are unaware that showing someone that they are in pain is a more effective way to help others feel remorse for what they did than raging at them.
Teens do not have to destroy any more relationships with "over the top" reactions! There are more effective ways of responding. I teach teens and young adults simple relaxation and awareness exercises that allow them to tame their anger.

Anger management counseling is often court-ordered, in which case specially certified programs are required. If you are wanting to change how you deal with anger on your own, in individual therapy, then please call or email. My approach is to help you identify triggers, both present and past, and to help you find ways to slow the anger process down so that you can feel in control again. When you contact me, we will discuss what approaches might work best for you.

Underneath anger is usually hidden pain. To help clients regulate their emotions and stop impulsive behaviors such as anger and rage, we need to bring this into awareness. I utilize cognitive behavioral, attachment theory, an early trauma model, and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) to help clients achieve their goals of anger reduction.

Anger is often appropriate and healthy. Letting it get out of control can be destructive. Anger makes us feel strong and powerful. But as with all power, it can be used constructively or destructively. Some people have difficulty managing their anger and they end up not only hurting others, but hurting themselves as well. The aftermath of their anger leaves them feeling guilty. Often anger is a substitute for deeper feelings that never quite get expressed. The good news is that with appropriate intervention, we can learn to manage our anger and use it to grow. I have worked extensively with people with uncontrollable anger who have learned to re-direct their rage and live full lives.

Anger is a completely healthy emotion. But, it can become unhealthy when it is not regulated properly. If anger is affecting your relationships and making you feel like it is out of your control, then you may need to look for some outside resources to help you regain balance and find better ways to get a handle on your anger. By learning alternate coping skills and processing unhealthy emotions with a therapist, anger management therapy can be very effective. I have worked both individually and in groups with adults, children, and adolescents providing them with useful techniques to manage anger that have led to increasing the quality of relationships in their lives.

When a patient has anger issues, I first teach them techniques to control the anger to avoid alienating others. I help them identify all the ways the anger negatively affects their lives. When they are motivated, I help them identify the underlying emotions that the anger is disguising, and then rehearse how they will express that feeling to the person who needs to hear it.

While anger does not automatically lead to aggression, it often does. It is frequently a blueprint for violence. All forms of family violence including road rage, desk rage, spousal abuse, child abuse, elder abuse and violence between children have reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Anger is a basic human emotion. Anger management classes teach helpful skills to manage anger in both healthy and appropriate ways. Anger management is helpful if you have difficulty controlling your temper or experience angry outbursts that lead to significant problems with the law, at work, at school, or in public situations such as driving. Being able to mange your emotions at work, school and i....

Does your spouse or child get angry easily? Are you frustrated because you can't talk to your spouse? I help people identify what triggers their anger and look at how they can express their anger in a healthy way. Working with adults and children, my goal is to help them communicate in a way that is open and honest but not hurtful or offensive. If you are looking to improve your relationships, I can help you.
William Josephs, Ph.D.
The key to anger management is the development of self awareness of the physical and emotional cues that signal the otherwise rapid onset of out of control emotions and fury. Learning to use training in cognitive awareness and behavioral relaxation enable the person to identify the signs of impending rapid escalations of anger; and to abort out of control episodes of explosive behavior. For the motivated person, the techniques of tracking and recording thoughts and triggers of anger provides a scientific means of gradually attaining control of out of control emotions and effective anger management.

Deryl Goldenberg, Ph.D.
Destructive and constructive anger are usually very mixed up in people's minds and in our culture. There is a place for constructive anger, but one needs to learn to discern between these two types. Given that most people have experienced a 'hodge podge' of destructive anger directed at them, the resulting confusion and humiliation have left their mark, and some people have swarn off anger, like swearing off alcohol. On the other side many repeat what was done, indulging this anger and harming others with their words and physically. I use education, anger journals, calming strategies, and straight talk to "help individuals learn to manage anger rather than having it manage them."
