Anxiety and stress can be treated using a variety of cognitive behavioral interventions. Often the beliefs a person holds as well as the thoughts & feelings have a powerful physical effect on the stress level of the individual. Immediate relief can be found in relaxation techniques, meditation, and deep breathing; however, lasting relief comes through examing the thinking, which contributes to the anxiety as it revolves around specific cues (phobias e.g. public humiliation, flying, etc.) as well as generalized anxiety which is more pervasive. Challenging perceptions, thoughts or beliefs can dramatically alter the bodies physical response (reduced panic attacks, fears, & phobias).

In our society today it is almost assumed that anxiety/stress will be a part of our daily life. And it is true that a certain amount of anxiety/stress is necessary for us to function. But there comes a time when it all becomes too much and we find ourselves pulling back from life, if not shutting down entirely. The point at which anxiety and stress begins to affect us negatively differs from person to person. Identifying the cause of your stress/anxiety is a good first step, especially if it is related to a specific event or situation. If the anxiety/stress seems more "free-floating," then we will look for coping strategies which can help to alleviate those immediate feelings.

I approach clients with anxiety and stress using a combination of cognitive, emotional and behavioral counseling. It has been my experience that restructuring the cognitive process along with learning better personal coping skills and exploring unresolved emotions is the most effective approach. I have vast experience with OCD and Generalized Anxiety disorders.
