Everyone, in some unique way, has experienced anxiety and stress. We experience anxiety in many different ways, but there is a major symptom of fear and panic that is abnormal. This may cause our body to go into a flight or fight response. It alerts us of danger by the way in which our body responds. . Severe anxiety is usually caused from stress. It may interfere with your daily activities and/or your relationships. Some of these reactions may cause you to worry when there is no need to do so. At

My counselling approach to anxiety and stress is identifying the anxiety-provoking thoughts that may be troubling the client. It is crucial to also identify any accompanying fears and related behaviours that may be problematic for the individual. I usually utilize relaxation, thought stopping and some hypnotherapy to address a client's anxiety. For stress, i usually provide suggestions for alternative coping mechanisms so that stress can be managed effectively.

Anxiety is always brought on by a triggering stimulus. The types of triggers are as varied as life itself. Anxious feelings and thoughts follow a pattern. The trigger initiates a feeling of on-coming jeopardy. The automatic thoughts (the first ones) come without conscious observing, so their arrival cannot be prevented. In spite of efforts to beat unpleasant thoughts they come again. We will re-frame process of thinking to alternate your negative response. Acceptance of the invasive thoughts and emotions is very challenging but without the acceptance we can’t process them. A warm and caring therapist helps you to reprocess and alternate positive thoughts and emotions.
Sophia Kahill, Ph.D., C.Psych.
Anxiety, panic and worry not only feel terrible, they can also restrict people's lives, limiting their activities and at times those of their families. Anxiety can also spread, over time affecting more areas of life and shrinking people's worlds as they avoid possible triggers of their anxiety. Short-term structured therapies can teach clients skills to manage and reduce their anxiety, and to build more productive reactions to stress. Cognitive therapy can help curb negative thinking that feeds anxiety. Some clients may choose a longer-term insight-oriented therapy to explore the roots of their anxiety and resolve it. Or an integrated, eclectic therapy approach may work best.

I can offer a clear route through anxiety to help you get to calmer place. Initially we may use grounding and breath-work techniques to achieve immediate relief, followed by EMDR or another trauma-clearing modality to begin to break down the roots of the anxiety. Ultimately though, I work with you to hear what the anxiety has to say to you about the kind of life you want to live, and about what actually matters most to you.
Leslie Nelson, MSW RSW BED
Life is becoming increasingly busy and stressful. It is challenging for people to "stay on top of things" without feeling pulled in a multitude of directions. As a result more people are feeling anxious, stressed and overwhelmed. Leslie enables clients to focus on what is most important to them - to "choose their battles", to put their energies where it really matters while taking care of themselves. If one doesn't take care of oneself there is not much left over for anyone else. She realizes this is easier said than done but believes it is imperative that one learns skills to manage" these competing demands" in a focused positive way. Her engaged centered approach facilitates this process.
Ganga Daryanani, R.S.W.
My method for relieving anxiety and stress is by first exploring whether they are related to: unresolved issues from childhood, situational circumstances, or negative/distorted thoughts. After exploring the root cause, I apply different modalities like Focusing (see website under Focusing www.holisticcounsel.com) to resolve the issues permanently. Focusing is a way to relax the body through guided commentary, after which we explore, still in the relaxed state, what the core issue is. I guide the client on how to resolve the core issue, or view it from another angle. The exercise goes deep into the mind and makes permanent changes. The client gets a new insight and a sense of relief.
