It is normal to worry and feel stressed about life's problems and pressures. But when compounded symptoms begin to overwhelm us to the point where we are getting headaches, heart palpitations, a churning stomach, cold sweats, sleepless nights, weight loss, obsessive thoughts, a distressed GI tract - then we need help to break the adrenaline-fear cycle. Anxiety feeds on fear and needs to be confronted, appropriately and safely, with relaxation techniques, new perceptions and constructive thinking patterns. A counsellor can help you do this.

My approach to treating anxiety & stress is to teach you how to face perceived or irrational unpleasant situations that you find threatening or in some way are triggering a negative outcome. Irrational & catastrophic thinking can paraIyze you from making healthy & productive choices in life. I teach you how to challenge your negative & irrational thoughts & behaviour that may be stopping you or paralyzing you from making more flexible choices & positive responses. This is done in a supportive & non threatening therapeutic environment & manner. The key to overcoming most anxiety problems is to reduce avoidance of situations that you fear & experience your fear in a gradual & controlled manner.

Anxiety can be immobilizing and all-consuming. We tend to cope with anxiety by avoiding triggers that produce uncomfortable sensations. Yet this strategy requires us to avoid more and more and makes it impossible for us to disprove our anxious predictions. Cognitive behaviour therapy builds awareness of our thinking biases. This awareness then serves as a starting point for exposure exercises that assist us with noticing that, albeit highly uncomfortable, the feared situations are manageable. Repeated exposure reduces the intensity of our fear reaction and frees us to direct our attention towards nonthreatening and possibly enjoyable aspects of our lives.

Feeling stressed and anxious are normal reactions to too much pressure, lack of control and not knowing how to cope with a situation. Sometimes emotions are overwhelming when challenges persist, and if they seem to block you from living a positive and satisfying life, you might wish to seek help. Sometimes we think ourselves into stress and anxiety by worrying about what MIGHT happen, but stress and anxiety can also be triggered by events, such as trauma or certain medications. Please allow me to help you understand your stress situation and find manageable solutions to reduce your sensation of pressure and anxiety. 905-842-3626

I can offer a clear route through anxiety to help you get to calmer place. Initially we may use grounding and breath-work techniques to achieve immediate relief, followed by EMDR or another trauma-clearing modality to begin to break down the roots of the anxiety. Ultimately though, I work with you to hear what the anxiety has to say to you about the kind of life you want to live, and about what actually matters most to you.
