Containing anxiety and stress can often be a long term battle. Be it due to an immediate circumstance that we feel is beyond our control or a life long feeling of unease that becomes debilitating. The real problem in dealing with stress over the long haul is the potential toll that it takes in our lives. It effects our health on many levels as well as the potential to exhaust the energy of our friends and family. Psychotherapy can offer a useful path to better coping and achieving a life that allows us simply to breathe. For in the end learning to breathe on all levels is truly the magic key.
Nikki DiFranks, PhD, MA, MS, LCSW-R
Anxiety; panic attacks; phobias; & obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)/ obsessive compulsive personality disorder are all manifestations of the Anxiety Disorders. Phobias are usually treated by exposure-desensitization techniques, while anxiety & panic disorders respond well to exploration of triggers, identification of maladaptive cognitions & illogical thinking, stress mgmnt, as well as awareness of what occurs or soothes as symptoms abate. Many patients will improve when medication is incorporated into treatment. Distraction, refocusing, & reinforcement techniques may also be introduced. I have occasionally found it helpful to treat OCD d/o's with analogs to self-help addictive treatment.
Carolyn AlRoy, Psy.D.
I have experience with reducing and eliminating panic attacks, curing phobias, and reducing more generalized anxiety. Anxiety can feel unbearable, and give you the sense that you are in danger. Here also looking at relationships can be very helpful to determine where your anxiety comes from (modeling anxious parents, getting a sense that the world is a dangerous place). and what thoughts and feelings your anxiety may be distracting you from. Getting to know you well can be instrumental in giving you relief from anxiety and reassure you that you are not alone.

Anxiety and stress, they go hand in hand. Anxiety seems to develop a mind of its own. And while a little bit of anxiety can help one go into action and be more productive, too much anxiety can be debilitating. I work with many bright people who have the idea that if they understand where their anxiety comes from, that they will be able to control it. It's not about control. It's about being in an environment with someone who can help you develop better coping mechanisms so that the anxiety can lessen or vanish completely.
Adam Jacobson, LCSW, MSOD
Anxiety is simply a difficult thing to experience. It ranges from a constant feeling of distress to an acutely overpowering feeling that seems to consume. It is also quite common. Years of working with this issue have made to clear to me that part of mastering anxiety is gaining a working knowledge of why ones gets anxious. Insight is not enough however. When awareness is achieved then one can move to replace old patterns with new ones. It is these new and increasingly adaptable patterns that leads to a successful mastery of anxiety.
Michael Bednarski, PhD
The causes of anxiety and stress are often misunderstood by health professionals. My approach to managing anxiety and stress is highly individualized and provides clients very simple but effective tools that will yield results within a few weeks. My clients and I are often surprised by the effectiveness of efforts when we build on a collaborative approach to addressing the unnecessary descriptiveness that comes from anxiety and stress

Stress can be felt from feeling pressure at work (or from not working), from always being on the go but still finding not enough time in the day, from feeling more responsibilities than you can handle, from being unable to deal with small stressors when they come up, from finding some areas of your life having significant effects on other areas of your life, or from many other sources. You can get beyond the effects of this by discussing what is going on and finding alternate strategies to deal with situations. Christopher looks forward to heling you on this journey as you see to come to a place of wholeness and peace.
Nancy Gubman, LCSW
What are you really anxious about? If the specific thing changes from day to day, or even hour to hour, then there is a bigger anxiety which "hooks onto" normal, everyday stresses. If the client is willing to go deeper, I try to help her or him to look at the big picture of anxiety. What is the real fear? Often, the smaller fears start to lessen.

I help individuals, using a structured format, to ascertain how to change their negative thought patterns, resolve ongoing conflicts, and distinguish between realistic and unrealistic fears. I teach the patient how to recognize distorted automatic thoughts and how to respond to those thoughts in a more reasons way. I teach methods of soothing when a person is feeling anxious. I help each patient identify and understand the long-standing dysfunctional assumptions that lead to anxiety.
Annie Block Pearl, M.S.
Anxiety and stress reflect our inability to cope with the conditions of our lives. While there are some aspects of our lives that we can actively change, often, what really needs to change, is our attitude towards these conditions. Together, we will sort through your daily experience and discover a more resourceful way of approaching your life. My integrative approach helps you to relax into your body and mind and listen to and trust in your inner guidance.
Jean Fitzpatrick, L.P.
