Anxiety and Depression are closely related. Anxiety is the fear that something will happen in the future that is usually based in past experiences. Current situations trigger memories that cause emotions to come rushing forward as the brain prepares us with the flight or fight response. In these extreme these become panic attacks as we begin to be anxious about feeling anxious. There are many techniques for dealing with these feelings: I like techniques based in DBT and EMDR, but also Inner Healing and Prayer and very effective for treating anxiety.

Many of my clients report the main trigger for overeating is "stress and anxiety". It sure helps them to know that their bodies have a predictable physical response to stress/anxiety that contributes to their compulsion to eat. Stress causes complex neurotransmitter reactions and affects our mood and behaviors. Dopamine increases rapidly under stress (focus, goal directed behaviors, energy, arousal) which leads to the decrease in Seratonin (feel good chemical). This can accelerate food cravings that are Seratonin stimulators, namely chocolate and sweets. That's at least part of the compulsive overeating picture. The ED is a bio-psycho-social problem and needs to be treated on all fronts.

When working with clients experiencing anxiety or stress, I begin by looking at everything "on the client's plate". We then work to determine if there are areas that can be modified so that the stress & anxiety is reduced. We also work to identify faulty thinking patterns that increase stress & anxiety. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which is highly researched & effective for clients experiencing anxiety. I teach you ways to become aware of irrational thoughts that lead to heightened feelings of stress & anxiety. You will then learn how to incorporate healthy, rational, positive thinking to challenge the negative thoughts. You can & will live with less stress & anxiety in your life!
