Anxiety can be scary and distressing to experience and live with. Stress may show itself through worrisome thoughts, physical symptoms, or social concerns. I assess a person's readiness for learning and implementing skills. I ask the client where they experience their anxiety; mostly in racing thoughts, or in their body (e.g. tightness, headaches, racing heart). I teach physical skills to the client, which can used to calm the client's anxiety at any time of day. I also teach mental skills, to combat a person's distracting thoughts. Homework is a regular part of counseling for anxiety and stress.

Anxiety is based in fear, and fear is often the result of unresolved past experiences and irrational beliefs about certain situations. I help clients process any past events that are lingering and preventing them from finding peace. I also help them identify their irrational beliefs and thoughts, in order to replace them with more accurate, productive thoughts. This is a process that takes practice, because the brain prefers to take the path of least resistance, but with hard work and consistency, the brain can be retrained, allowing the client to "think peaceful, feel peaceful".

Everyone has some level of anxiety and stress in their life. However, sometimes they can rise to an unmanageable level. It is my goal to assist my clients in regaining control over their anxieties and reducing their stress to a reasonable level. Often, the counseling process itself is helpful as an outlet for dealing with anxiety and stress. Cognitive behavioral techniques can also be very helpful to control anxiety and promote stress reduction.
