My approach to anxiety and stress is not so much around getting rid of it, but how to relate to it differently and make choices based on values vs. fear or pressure. We all have ways of coping with anxiety and stress that seem to work in the short term, but really just keep it active and keep us from living life the way we want to. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy I believe is very beneficial with stress and anxiety as it supports you in having a different relationship with your anxious thoughts and feelings so you are not dictated by them and can go more toward what matters to you,

We cannot escape anxiety and stress as they are an inevitable part of modern life, but we can manage them within our personal tolerance thresholds. Mindfulness is the first thing that I help clients master and bring into their daily life. Mindfulness or focused attention exercises can help us get in touch with our body and monitor our own feelings; it will help us self-soothe and cope with anxiety and stress. A few additions to daily routine are enough, e.g.: taking an extra minute in the shower, listening to sounds in the environment, paying attention to physical sensations in alteration with our inner sensations; accepting any thoughts and feelings allowing them to come and pass. It works!

Anxiety and stress impact our sleep, physical health, and our ability to be fully present in our lives. Stress acts as a ‘check engine’ light to let us know something in our environment needs to be addressed. We cannot eliminate stress without attending to our stressors. Some people find a moderate amount of anxiety gives them the umph they need to get things done. Ultimately, we want to feel good in our bodies, and be fully present, without the shadow of worry at every turn. What are these emotions trying to tell us? Getting to their roots gives us the information we need to make healthy adjustments in our lives, so the ‘check engine’ lights can turn back off.

In my professional and personal experience I have found that problems with anxiety, stress, depression, and anger issues are often overlapping. Many people feel mixed emotions of fear, worry, pressure, frustration, guilt, shame and low self worth. Unfortunately we have a tendency to doubt our abilities and our value which can quickly become a 'self fulfilling prophecy' and cause us to judge ourselves harshly, and/or isolate from others. This can become a cycle but it can often be broken by speaking openly with a professional who is competent, kind and encouraging. I am diligent in helping clients identify the false core beliefs and establish new beliefs that empower them again.

Most of us suffer from anxiety and stress at some point in our lives. And we live with it. What if we didn't have to live with it? What if there was a way to alleviate it from our lives? What if it was a choice? Most of the stress and anxiety in our lives comes from our perspective of what is happening in our lives. This perspective is coming from us, and therefore it is possible to change it. I help clients do this through cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness, meditation and other methods that enable them to become much more aware of their thoughts and the choices they have to think differently. There is no need to suffer. There is another way!

Anxiety as a result of stress is one of, if not the major contributing factor to poor health in most areas of people lives. If you have ever been tense before an exam or a visit to the dentist, you have a felt anxiety. Increased heart rate, sweating, rapid breathing, dry mouth, & a sense of dread are common. Changing this involves cognitive & behavioural approaches. Cognitive change is understanding how thoughts contribute to symptoms and how to change thought patterns to reduce the intensity of your anxiety. And behavioral changes involve using techniques to reduce or stop any undesired behaviors that are a result of the anxiety you have been experiencing.

We are far more primitive in our reactions than we like to think, and fear, stress, or anxiety, can go from an adaptive warning to a very non adaptive over reaction, arresting our ability to function. I have worked extensively in this area, in giving workshops and as a trainer for other counsellors, focusing first on understanding the body's reaction and then developing skills to over-ride the anxiety response. Using a mindfulness approach, staying connected with our needs, and focusing on resiliency, anxiety can be tamed.
