Young children who experience symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, oppositional behaviors, aggression, poor peer relationships, or academic problems are a joy to work with. I require a parent to be present when I work with children under 6 years old, as the parent must learn how to repeat what we do in the session at home. I use play therapy, expressive arts therapy, and animal assisted therapy with young children, as I've found these to be the most effective interventions. Parents can participate in family therapy with their child, and sometimes we may meet separately to discuss their child's treatment. One great thing about counseling children is that they are so capable of change.

Young children experience many of the challenges faced by older siblings and adults in their families with fewer internal resources to meet them. They can more easily feel overwhelmed and distressed by family losses, change, or unexpected disruptions from their routine. For many the transition to pre-school or elementary school can be difficult and disorienting. Some young children previously considered energetic, find they cannot sit still and focus the way their peers seem to do easily in the classroom. Capital Counseling provides counseling to young children and their...(view profile to read more)

James Foster & Associates, COUNSELINGNH

540 Chestnut Street, Manchester, New Hampshire 03101

James Foster & Associates provides counseling for children. Some issues that are addressed are behavior problems, school issues, sibling rivalry, divorce, blended families, trauma and stress. The child's parent(s) will come for an initial intake appointment to provide background information of the problem area. The child would then be assessed by the clinician. Upon assessing the child, the Clinician will meet with the parent(s) to discuss the treatment plan and to move forward with play therapy. Parent's participation in either individual and/or collateral appointments may be necessary to process parenting experiences and difficulties with the child.

I have worked with a 4 year old child of divorced parents. These children are at risk for "disorganized attachment", a precursor to childhood separation anxiety. I feel the therapist needs perfect rapport to work with such a delicate situation. I use drawing, cartoons, CD's, dancing, and cookies. I may wish to consult with an MD. If the child tends to disassociate from reality, I'm afraid a child psychiatrist would need to be brought in.
